Chrysler Gets into Electric Car Race

Posted September 23, 2008 3:20 PM

From CNET News.com:

Struggling automaker Chrysler on Tuesday unveiled a line of electric cars scheduled to start shipping at the end of 2010. The surprise announcement brings Chrysler in direct competition with General Motors, which last week showed off the Chevy Volt, an extended-range electric car also due in late 2010. Chrysler's plans call for two electric cars, using the same concept as the Volt and two other all-electric cars. Chrysler's top executives showed off an extended-range electric Jeep Wrangler and a mini-van to CNBC on Tuesday. As with the Volt, lithium-ion batteries will power the car for the first 40 miles and a small, one-liter, internal combustion engine will charge the battery for longer rides. A consumer will be able to charge the batteries in eight hours from a U.S. 110-volt outlet or four hours from a 220-volt outlet. "The range is about 400 miles on eight or nine gallons of gas," Chrysler Vice Chairman Tom LaSorda told CNBC. Chrysler also unveiled a prototype of an all-electric sports car, called the Dodge EV, which can go 150 or 200 miles on a charge and accelerate from 0 to 60 miles per hour in under five seconds.

The Peapod, sorry Chrysler that name is already taken. I used to build small wooden boats and that was the name of one of them.

Chrysler why don't you sell to GE already? They have all of the technology and expertise in manufacturing and you have or soon will a lot of unused automobile manufacturing plants with an experienced and proud work force"Americans" that can get the job done.

Besides Chysler you have a bank that your parent owns that has or soon will a lot of exposure to the sub prime mess, Cerebus you remember GMAC....

Good luck.

Wow what a wunderful development?? Back in the dark ages '50's a group of electrical engineers graduates of the Univ. of Rhode Island developed a vehicle based on a Crosley automobile using electric drive with batteries replacing the engine and a small gasoline driven engine/generator. The concept was to be able to drive up to 40 miles on batteries. Then start the generator which will stop when batteries are recharged. Because of the time and cheap gasoline it did not sell. Orher than more modern equipment I see no difference in concept. By the way that smokestack spewing out black smoke from coal is what is driving that car. Lets fix the production of more clean electricity first.

A buddy of mine sent this link:

http://money.cnn.com/news/newsfeeds/articles/djf500/200809231453DOWJONESDJONLINE000594_FORTUNE5.htm

So who wouldn't "develop" electric cars if they could get a $25 billion loan?!

Also check out this link:

http://books.google.com/books?id=awv576V2xscC&printsec=frontcover&dq=the+truth+about+automobiles&sig=ACfU3U3zzVe0bcmxSXfnDt7RyJLx95Qpyg#PPA1,M1

What I want to know is why this money isn't being made available to small firms who could enter the market and decentralize the transportation industry? Why are the feds not endorsing fair competition instead of building up the monopoly of the big three? Why electric? Why not a Stirling converter powered car that could run on anything that can burn...including solid fuels!?

End Rant....

I'd better get a better paying job so the government can take more out in taxes to give them. I'd definitely like for my earnings to go to th big three instead of investments that I could turn around and use for capital to start my own manufacturing business.

Honestly, I don't mind taxes, but I think I could spend my money a little better than the government can. After all, if this was a worth while venture, wouldn't more people be buying stock in the big three so the big three could use that capital to retool?

The Peapod has such a beautiful smile.

The same old problem with the electric car: A new car is cheaper than replacing the batteries, plus what happens to the scrap car and batteries.

Kind Regards....
