Private Rocket Goes to Space

Posted September 29, 2008 1:18 PM

From Neatorama:

SpaceX has succeeded in their attempt to launch the Falcon 1 rocket into space. The company, headed by eBay co-founder Elon Musk, had made three unsuccessful tries before yesterday's launch. The tensest moment came just before stage separation. At that critical juncture, the third launch attempt had failed. This time, it worked out perfectly. Eight minutes after leaving the ground, Falcon 1 reached a speed of 5200 meters per second and passed above the International Space Station. "I don't know what to say… because my mind is just blown," said Musk, during a brief address to his staff after the successful launch. "This is just the first step of many." The feat is a giant leap forward for privately-funded space ventures, and follows the spectacular 2004 suborbital flight of SpaceShipOne.

We were all beginning to wonder when they were going to actually do it. Good thing Musk's pockets are deep.

Deeper than the sky is high, apparently! Presumably his business plan includes a profit-taking phase to follow.

As the days go by, there is eventually going to be so much of that orbiting junk above our heads, it's going to cut down the sunlight.

Not to mention the problems of hitting some on the way through the "Space Debris Curtain".

Kind Regards....

Brilliant! It may not stop global warming, but it can't hurt!

I remember an old TV series about a junk yard owner that built a rocket from spare parts to slavage junk from space. I think it starred Andy Griffith. The rocket had car wheels for landing pads. HA!

Future business opportunity?????

With water on Mars, in moon rocks and in the asteroid belt it should be possible to set up self-sustaining industrial colonies. If there is money to be made, then the best way to develop space is to get private companies out there. "Space, the final frontier." is dawning, if we can just keep government out of it.

Go, SpaceX!
