NASA Spacecraft Finds the Sun is Not a Perfect Sphere

Posted October 03, 2008 10:33 AM

From digg.com: Stories / Popular:

Scientists using NASA's RHESSI spacecraft have measured the roundness of the sun with unprecedented precision. They find that it is not a perfect sphere. During years of high solar activity, the sun develops a thin cantaloupe skin that significantly increases its apparent oblateness: the sun's equatorial radius becomes slightly larger than its poles.

Since the sun is rotating, it's equatorial radius will always be larger than it's poles due to centrifugal force.

Would you expect to find the accretion disc around a massive black hole is a perfect circle? How would gravitational forces modify the "circle" and what about jets being ejected from the accretion disc? Nice subject for a PhD in Astronomy.

Of course as the sun rotates, the equator would naturally bulge in comparison with the axial poles.
