Why Dogs Don't Enjoy Music

Posted October 24, 2008 9:06 AM

From Scientific American:

Anyone with normal hearing can distinguish between the musical tones in a scale: do, re, mi, fa, so, la, ti, do. We take this ability for granted, but among most mammals the feat is unparalleled. This finding is one of many insights into the remarkable acuity of human hearing garnered by researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles, Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot, Israel, reported in January in the journal Nature.

Who says dogs don't enjoy music? Mine can tell the difference between light classical and opera well enough - the latter puts him to sleep.

Only certain tones set our dogs to howling, kids always do that stuff.

When I was a child, my parents would ususally play their stero in the evenings. My dog would occasionally choose to lie within a foot or two of the speaker. Sometimes he'd even sleep there. This always surprised me because the music was pretty loud. When the stero wasn't on, he never went there. I assume he enjoyed the music or maybe just the vibrations.

That's because he can hear the silent 'C' in rap.

I think birds have a real ear for pitches. Wild birds of the same species can hear each other's call notes and distinguish them from similar call notes from different species. (Call notes are different from bird songs, a long string of notes usually heard in mating season. Sometimes a call note is a single note, or a short series of notes, used to keep in touch with others of the same species.)

Our African gray parrot can imitate strings of notes of different pitches, so he can clearly hear the different pitches. (He's currently learning Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D minor.) And he loves some classic rock. Haven't tried him on rap and probably never will. Don't want him repeating that, anyway.
