It's Snowing on Mars...

Posted October 29, 2008 8:00 AM

...despite the meltdown of polar ice caps and worldwide financial institutions. Reports of a few snowflakes falling from Martian clouds make me wonder — will creativity and discovery, symbolized by the Phoenix Mars Lander, ever triumph over human folly and its disastrous results?

Does the Martian snow reach the ground? If so, that would be very surprising due to the extremely low humidity of the Martian atmosphere. The snow should sublime back to the gas state on the way down, just as the ice samples gather from the ground tended to sublime before they could be delivered to the analyzer.
