Change is Scary

Posted November 05, 2008 9:28 AM

From TreeHugger:

Imagine what it was like to walk into a room and not know what to do. When the gas companies were spreading rumors that electricity is harmful to health and will affect the soundness of sleep. Fortunately, when something is such an immediate and obvious improvement, it overcomes the naysayers and the rumors in no time flat.

Yes, I agree, I blame the original ape like ancestor who was the first to come down from the trees. I Mean, What was he thinking?

I was going to do a Letterman top ten, but didn't have time for ten so here's a few.

1. He fell out of the tree in his sleep, whacked his head and couldn't remember where he lived.

2. He was cast out of the herd for taking too many banana breaks.

3. It was all a dare.

4. He had to use the restroom and when he got back someone had taken his spot.

5. It was too hard to show off his moves and break-dancing skills up on that branch.

6. Just trying to catch a break from the inlaws.

Sorry - gotta go. Have fun!

There have been many things which were immediate and obvious improvements.

Early luminous clock and watch dials - Radium paint killed the workers.

Early matches - Killed the workers with "phossy jaw'.

Strike anywhere wax matches - Caused many a fire in the pocket of the user.

Nuclear energy from fission - Still going to be a major problem for many thousands of years with the radioactive and toxic waste.

Laudanum - Used to pacify babies - caused opium dependency.

Tobacco - Advertised as "Good for your health" in early days - later the discovered bad effects were hotly denied for decades by tobacco companies - Cancer, emphysema and worse.

I'm all for improvements and innovations, but in the excitement of a new discovery, the short and long-term bad effects are often discarded.

Kind Regards....

And to this delightful list let's add...

  • Raining on parades.
  • Having one's sense of humor surgically removed then expecting others to follow suit.
  • Heaping wet blankets on a good campfire.
  • Smelling flowers then go looking around for a coffin.

Hey!!! I'll have no one sayin' anything bad about laudanum!!!

Also, keep in mind that the power and direction of the FDA changes according to Presidential wishes. Usually performed by assigning appointees. The EPA and the FDA and FEMA (just to name a few) have had their teeth jerked out on several occasions in the past 8-years.
