Should You Get Paid While Your Computer Boots?

Posted November 19, 2008 9:31 AM

From Slashdot:

An anonymous reader notes a posting up at a law blog with the provocative title Does Your Boss Have to Pay You While You Wait for Vista to Boot Up?. (Provocative because Vista doesn't boot more slowly than anything else, necessarily, as one commenter points out.) The National Law Journal article behind the post requires subscription. Quoting: "Lawyers are noting a new type of lawsuit, in which employees are suing over time spent booting [up] their computers.

I was going to wade in here with a big tirade about whether machinists should have their pay docked for the time it takes for their drill/mill/lathe whatever to run up to speed (accumulated over the day) usw, but I think most of it's been chewed over in the discussion following the linked article.

We should be able to sue Microsoft for all the lost time caused by their latest operating system.

The time taken for my PC to boot is not wasted, it's spent doing something useful like making tea.

Easiest remedy is to leave the PC on 24/7.

That way Hard Drive longevity is increased, along with other hardware items which may be damaged by heating/cooling cycling.

Kind Regards....

I usually put my (XP) machine into hibernation overnight & when I'm leaving the office for a while. Takes 15-20 seconds to wake up. I reboot about once a week, or when things start getting (too) slow & wobbly.
