Still Keen on Green?

Posted November 27, 2008 8:50 AM

In a time of economic uncertainty, downturn in demand, and increased competitiveness, packaging companies have to decide how to make cost savings and focus on the core drivers of growth. With the hard reality of consumers being hit in the pocket, will they still be concerned about green packaging? Or is the environment now a fundamental part of consumer consciousness? Or packaging at all? Packaging has gotten to be the "tail that wags the dog" in many industries; for many products, the cost of packaging is the single largest cost to a manufacturer and hence to the final customer. If packaging costs cant be controlled, they may put themselves out of business.

One must distinguish between green hype and true green. True green reduces the consumption of resources (energy and raw materials) and reduces waste (especially end-of-life disposal). Unnecessary packaging is inherently non-green, no matter what materials one uses. True green, reducing the overall impact on the environment, also happens to be economically sound, no matter what state the economy is enduring. The current downturn should help filter the hype from the true green...
