Milky Way is 'Sweet Throughout'

Posted November 25, 2008 9:19 AM

From BBC News | Science & Environment | UK Edition:

A simple sugar that is an ingredient of life has been found for the first time in a relatively hospitable part of the galaxy. As molecules go, glycolaldehyde is not an impressive one, but its link to the origins of life make it significant. It can react to form ribose, a key constituent of the nucleic acid RNA. The study, in Astrophysical Journal Letters, is important as it shows organic molecules in a region of space where planets could form.

When you were a child you were taught that the Milky Way system (galaxy) is constructed in the same way as one of these sugar molecules?

How so?

Hi,Eman,

What is How so? = how soon? or why did you say like that?

I know you found my mistake. in fact, it is. Glancing at the title, I've thrown out the words unresponsibly. I cannt access to the web site either, although I try now again.

Forget it, dont take it seriously.

Off the track, I like yyour new avatar. Its more lovely than the old that. To be true, I always though the old one appeared you were quarrelsome. and prepare to quarrel with anyone about anything.

How about your thanksgiving day?

Hi cnpower,

"How so?" = "How did that (something) come to be? Please explain further."

or

"How so?" = "How (or why) do you think this is true? Would you explain it, please?"

"How so?" is a way of asking the same questions as those above, but without using so many words. "How so?" is not an idiom so much as it is a conversational shortcut whose meaning is understood to be the same as the longer questions.

--

My old avatar looked quarrelsome? Probably because I'm quarrelsome, neh?

My old avatar is from the Alfred Hitchcock thriller Psycho. The picture is of Janet Leigh just seconds before a psychopathic killer chops her with an axe while she's taking a shower. She is screaming in sheer terror of what is about to befall her. No, that was no quarrelsome look on her face! She has the same expression my wife does when she sees me before I have the morning's first cup of coffee!

I'm glad you like my new avatar. It is also from a movie: Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery. In the pic agent Powers is surrounded by FemBots; lethal female robots dressed in fluffy 1960s baby-doll nightwear. Their boobs are machine guns (but don't tell anyone). The FemBots were created by Doctor Evil to kill agent Powers. You can see the full pic here.

How was my Thanksgiving holiday? We quarrelled. She wanted turkey, but I've never cared much for her relatives. Too tough and stringy.

"Why so?" works as well.

Cnpower, if you can get a copy of Hitchcock's biography, "The Dark Side of Genius," then do so. Excellent book.

He is well known in chinese movies funs. I can find out easily his works and his biographic books translated in chinese in our library. But I'm not a director, so I needn't to read that. in fact I have no skill to read that English version.

However, I more like to read Jules Verne: any thing one man can image, others can make it real.

You don't need to be a director to enjoy Hitchcock's biography. The book was not written for directors, but for the general reading public. If you can find a Chinese-language copy, buy or borrow it. It really is worth a read. Hitchcock was an unusual and fascinating man.

I cannt image you are still a literary amateur. I think you can teach English in china that will be more bwtter than those who only study literature.

we chatted a whole afternoon while played paper card. as soon as mentioned this famous Britain director, they went into rapture, his style, his edit way, his clips content, do you know " the 39 steps" when they talked about it, I found it s that rather than what I have seen. what I saw is about the second world war, where took place in Britain, big Ben. ha ha, that was another feature film. In fact I know most of their talking whick I read many years ago,now its only recall. although he was a master at suspension film, but I don't like those stories. we talked with critics, however they have more thought than those directors had. they talked his thought, career and works in critical view. I thought he must be a strange man who live that times. This might be caused by lost a beauty. that famous actress. Do you like him? can I ask why you like him? do you hate this society and things around you? the government or society hasn't given you a fair treatment for your professional skill? so you hate yahoo, hate Microsoft, and those computer systems and so, so... so the world wages. (dont take it seriously)

BTW, do you know Pearl.s.buck and her novels? and film? a female Nobel prize owner. and how about Christie?

You are smart. you can guess all, but, Would you like to talk about how the society or company dealt unfairly with you on several occasions? or you think there are several unfair competitions so that you complain this society? then scream like that man in the left picture which might quote from H's film. to release your complains. The world is chaos, so you wish to look for comfort from his film?

(learn from Fleud or infer like Christie. just play a game.) only joke. I might have getten a wrong conclution.

You are offering to psychoanalyze me on a thread about the discovery of sugar molecules in a region of the Milky Way 26,000 light years from here?

Well, it's a start, but first I must warn you that the last guy who tried that left here with an uncontrollable twitch on the left side of his face. He's still institutionalized at Austin State Hospital.

So, where shall we begin? At the beginning?

Okay, here goes: I was born in the back seat of a Greyhound bus going down Highway 41. My biological father was a Catholic clergyman who now lives in Korea -- Cardinal Sin I believe his name was -- and my mother was an errant nun. They orphaned me in Texas' East Piney Woods by dumping me into a shoddy recycling bin. Somehow I managed to escape, only to fall into a nest of feral dachshunds. I still have the scars. My adoptive mother went by the name of Woofy and was a real bitch and was pregnant most of the time. Dad was an itinerant stud who begged for scraps at the local titty bar and let people pet him. When he wasn't doing that, he stayed busy making more dachshunds. It was a tough life, for sure. Especially first grade, because according to the school disciplinarian I howled too much and bit people. They finally muzzled me and packed me off to obedience school. After that it's all been downhill...

I do like those sugar bowls.

It's an expensive way to locate a small bit of a sugar-like molecule.

Kind Regards....

Come now, SparkY. It's cheapest way possible short of actually going there. On the other hand, I wouldn't mind enjoying a

or two whilst on a leisurely cruise through, say, this place...

Btw, here's a pic of G31.41+031, 26,000 ly away, where they found the sugar molecules. Highest concentrations were found in the area indicated by the green circle.

Also found sea-foam frosting, two Boston Cream Pies (my fave, bar none) and a bag of biscuits.

Care for some tea?
