...excuse me, but Bill Gates--huh?!?!

...maybe as "sucessful" purveyor of less-than-optimum software to the masses, but as a person of "...positive influence..." in science, I truly doubt it.

...granted his money may BUY influence, but I (personally) don't see him as a good influence in science, just a shrewd marketer of dubious software products to a captive audience.

...sorry, just MY 2¢ opinion...and, yes, I own a PC not a MAC.

P.S.--most collegiate computer professors shun the Microsoft™-method of code development for more proven systematic approaches.

Top marks to Harold Varmus; Former Director, National Institutes of Health: Champion of Open Access.

<"....Varmus's latest challenge has been an attempt to overhaul the system of publishing research in journals so that all papers are freely available on the Internet—instead of only by expensive subscription. This allows researchers at any level of income, in any part of the world, to build on the body of knowledge.

The manifestation of Varmus's effort, the Public Library of Science and its roster of academic publications, has become one of the most cited sources in academic research and has inspired others worldwide to follow its lead......">

Kind Regards....

I think the title is somewhat off the mark, The 10 Most Influential People in (current) funded science projects maybe?
