Intel Seeks Leaner, Greener Power Sources

Posted December 09, 2008 10:33 AM

From [Geeks Are Sexy] Technology News:

Intel is researching how to power devices in ways that are both more convenient and greener. They're in the process of developing technology that can capture ambient sources of energy, such as sunlight, body heat, radiation from cell phone towers, and even the human energy expended to operate a hand-held device.  Move that finger around, and you're simultaneously turning a tiny generator.

I cant blame them for trying, however I think they are beating a dead horse in the alternative power generation area, sure the glucose in my blood after having an energy drink may provide some static electricity to run my cell phone a couple seconds if its lined with cloth. but my laptop would no doubt short, and smoke.

On the other hand, radiation from cell phone towers... not alternatively green unless the the power going to the towers is from a wind turbine or something. however, then it just makes all cell phone towers a giant Tesla coil... and then were talking free energy for everyone in the radius, energy transmitted through the air would be handy, wireless electricity would be difficult to bill... very difficult. but coffee shops or other similar locations could have small Tesla coils in the center of their building or room just like wireless internet. never mind the open spark if you put a little effort into insulation, any electrical device would need an adapter wireless antenna made for converting that radiation back into usable electricity, aluminum foil actually works ok.

once people realize the usefulness of that technology they will see that a body heat powered laptop is the equivalent of a toddler holding its breathe till its blue in the face, its unnecessary and doesn't come close to solving any real problems.
