Seeing Thoughts

Posted December 12, 2008 9:28 AM

From Pink Tentacle:

Researchers from Japan's ATR Computational Neuroscience Laboratories have developed new brain analysis technology that can reconstruct the images inside a person's mind and display them on a computer monitor, it was announced on December 11. According to the researchers, further development of the technology may soon make it possible to view other people's dreams while they sleep.

wicked, that would unlock a lot of mysteries to the sub-conscious and memory. it also causes a ethical debate, if you can take a picture from the brain, could you do the opposite and place a picture in the brain. I dont know if i want a Hanes commercial playing in my dreams...

Cash,

It doesn't matter what sort of scientific breakthrough you have, there will be some who will use it for good and some for bad. Sometimes the unintended consequences of even the good uses can be worse than the intended bad uses.

Finally!!! I can download my thoughts onto a computer! Or at least a VCR. I was getting so tired of remembering all that stuff manually.

And cashman...if you don't want them broadcasting Hanes commercials into your head, just stop wearing underwear. They won't try to sell to a non-user demographic.

Just what we need, some but-h**le messing with our dreams and turning us into "Freddy Kruger" types. Does prove what the old school types have known all along; we are electrical beings. Just believe first, then hook up and really know your neighbor.

At this point it looks like they can only read the patterns back from brains that have viewed the test samples while being 'recorded' Kind of like speech recognition SW only being accurate after being 'trained' by the user.

If this proves to be able to use a generic set of patterns on a wide range of subjects, it will open a whole lot of doors a whole lot wider.

I'm all for the thought recorder that can keep up with my thought process. I sure can't type or even speak that fast. It will turn the craze of aluminium foil hats into a fashion.

I for one wouldnt want anyone, especially the politicians, reading my thoughts. They would lock me up for what I am thinking of doing to them.

I am somewhat skeptical... but IF it is demonstrably detailed and reproducable, it should make a big splash within a few years.
