It’s a Fiesta! – A Top Gear Ford Fiesta Review

Posted December 16, 2008 12:01 AM by Jaxy

Top Gear (UK) is a television series on BBC that features a variety of motor vehicles. Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May are the hosts for this Emmy Award-winning program. Each episode features a car (usually a high-end one) that is discussed while being driven (at high rates of speed) through turns and straight-aways. The TV show also has challenges and races that prompt the hosts to creatively choose cars under a tight budget. There is also a daily segment that puts a "star in a reasonably-priced car".

Then there are segments that are witty and hilarious. In this case, it took just one letter from a disgruntled fan to make Jeremy Clarkson launch a segment to prove the fan wrong. The letter stated that Top Gear didn't know how to "test cars properly". Top Gear replied with a hearty segment on the Ford Fiesta in which Jeremy Clarkson assessed the following questions:

  • Is it easy to park?
  • What if I go to a Shopping Centre and get chased by baddies in a Corvette?
  • Is it green?
  • Can I afford it?
  • What if I'm asked to take part in a beach assault with the Royal Marines?

The Ford Fiesta segment on Top Gear is a sarcastic way of saying, "See? We test thoroughly". While I may never be asked to participate in a beach assault, this video is a nice portrayal of how it would go. So I urge you to go to this video and get ready for 10 minutes of factual, laugh-out-loud fun.

Hi Jaxy - Many thanks for sharing the video - been a U.S. fan of Top Gear and Clarkson's "humour" since BBC World TV channel first started test-streaming over the Internet about 8-9 years ago. Did Jeremy really say in the video you shared that he could lower his CO2 tax bill to the UK gov't by buying a Fiesta? A glimpse of our own future?? - Larry

It is the 1.6 liter diesel version of the Fiesta model that Jeremy said had such low CO2 emissions that the owner wouldn't be taxed. This may be a glimpse into the future.

I will embellish that there is a possible new car of the future taking stronghold. The

Honda FCX Clarity is causing a new buzz in the Top Gear set. This car is found in California where compressed hydrogen is available at the pumps. This car uses compressed hydrogen to fuel it and the only emission is water. Compressed hydrogen is just as expensive as gas right now, but it is easier to find (even though you usually find it coupled with other elements - eventually, as James May suggests, it will be much easier to strip hydrogen from the elements than to find oil).

I find that this Honda definitely out-innovates the new Tesla coming out which is battery powered. The Tesla needs to be charged up for 16 hours between uses (assuming you drain the battery). But it is the Honda that should be causing a stir. By being just as convenient regular cars (with the method of refueling at a pump instead of a wall socket), the Honda is more of a glimpse of the future than the Fiesta or the Tesla.

While I was skeptical at first (I guess because it was about a Ford), the video was pretty funny. I particularly enjoyed the chase scene (but felt bad about the damage incurred by the Corvette) and was amazed that they dumped the little car off in the water like that - and that it made it out! Wonder if it still runs okay - that would be a true test!

Thank you for your comment. Well, for the short term it seemed to work because he was driving it on the beach. I believe that some of their segments, while aimed at auto fanatics are humorous and enjoyable for everyone. See how bad Corvettes are?? They ruin malls!

I like Top Gear also. I like the shows where they race up Pike's Peak.

Top Gear - Peugeot 205 T16 - Ari Vatanen - Pikes Peak.mpg

I went up Pike's Peak a few years ago with my family - just not as fast.

The show were tried to convert cars into amphibious vehicles was also good.

Top Gear - Car-Boat Challenge - BBC

Haha, I loved the amphibious car episodes also! I also loved how hilariously James May failed. I hope that they have another episode and attempt again to try to break the record for traveling across the English Channel. Until then, the races and segments they have now are joyous to watch.
