Massive Volcanic Eruptions Killed Off the Dinosaurs

Posted December 16, 2008 11:39 AM

From Wired Top Stories:

Evidence that an asteroid may not have doomed the dinosaurs after all is accumulating in the biggest challenge the extinction theory has met in three decades. The combination of studies on dinosaur fossils, magnetic signatures in rocks and the timing of the disappearance of different species suggest it was massive volcanic eruptions in India that belched sulfur into the air for around 10,000 years that did the beasts in.

When I was younger it was poisonous volcanic gasses that killed the dinosaurs. Then it was the asteroid. Now it's climate-changing volcanic gasses. Care to spin the "Wheel of Extinction" and see what comes up next?

How about a combo platter? Giant asteroid impact = volcanic eruptions set off by the impact. That large an impact would vibrate the entire planet enough to relieve all of the built up stresses at all of the fault lines at the same time. the resulting tsunami's, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, nuclear winter, would be simultanious world wide and last for decades.

this is the theory that I am familiar with as well. Makes good sense.

That must have stunk really bad. Sulfur smell, dead carcasses and such. By the way, did the air ever clear there?

(The true origin of the Deccan traps is a very rare geologic coincidence of a hot spot - fountain of magma from more than 2500Km deep- being in a position beneath a continental fault to spit a lot of volcanic melt.)

So now we have to combat not only future asteroids aiming at Earth,

also volcanic eruptions changing our climate,

also the natural climate change,

also the human-made climate change,

so we will be exhausted within some very few years

and what really changed?

Earth will suffer from time to time - the more we wait the more likely is a massive event.

Yellowstone eruption for example will cover the mid-west to west beneath 5 to 500" of ashes. And we will not have a possibility to counteract.

So prepare a risk index like a a pH value - logarithmic.

Act accordingly.

Combat against CO2 is nonsense.

Don't forget to enjoy your life, holidays coming. The next day may be better or worse than today.

So do something good for your family, for your friends, for your boss and don't forget yourself.

(Equal share would say 20% for any of the parties!)

I have come up with a new theory. The dinosaurs kept multiplying until one day they were all over the world. They all farted, and then lightning struck. All that methane gas ignited, and POOF, everything burned up except what was underground or in the water.

This happened soon after the dinosaurs discovered cheese.
