Batteries To Store Wind Energy

Posted December 29, 2008 8:38 AM

From Slashdot:

Scientific American reports that Xcel Energy, a Minneapolis-based utility company, has started to test a new technology to store wind energy in batteries. The company is currently trying it in a 1,100 megawatt facility of wind turbines in Southern Minnesota. The company started this effort because 'the wind doesn't always blow and, even worse, it often blows strongest when people aren't using much electricity, like late at night.'

Yes our towers are now Duracell copper tops but we do have a hard time getting Techs to touch the side strip to tell us how charged it is Harder yet is to get them to do it twice.

Seriously if wind power is only marginal viable at cost per watt hr. batteries are going to make this even worse. Yes power is available at the time of need but the cost just went to in the red.

How many lead acid batteries make 1,100 megawatts? Ok how many is that in Trains not Train car loads?

I am beginning to believe that windmills should be left to pumping water into cattle troughs.

Or left to places that the wind does make them viable which are not many.

Form off the grid systems that have battery storage it also makes sense due to the cost of putting in the power lines to the home offsetting the price variable.

If you are able to stabilize/convert/store/convert/use efficiently it makes great sense. I've read a lot on off the grid systems. Most include many efficiency changes and sacrifices.

Not that I'm against it. I'd build a system tomorrow if I could convince the wife. Of course I would also live in a region that requires it too.

Shared systems seem to be the best. Wind/solar/hydro with a fuel generator backup.

The best system I've read about is a hydro diversion system on a river. I believe their duct was 4 ft dia.

We have wind here for most of the time. The last few days the Dams here don't need to produce much. 20 - 40 mph for days.

I have plans to put a wind turbine in the next year or two. Still evaluating what will work the best.

Have you seen this?

I haven't looked into it much but it looks interesting.

Yes gdevine,

thank you,

I have two designs I'm considering, one simple and one complex.

The complex uses a forward swept wing and an automatic variable pitch system based on rotational speed. (my conception)

The other is a vertical system based on flaps. If I can figure out how to make it quiet it will do fine. It is easy to build and easily scalable.

The good thing is that they're investing in battery tech. Mabye these can be adapted for other uses.
