Japan Turns to Technology to Lift Fishing Industry

Posted December 26, 2008 11:42 AM

From NYT > Technology:

OTOSHIBE, Japan — The Shinei Maru No. 66 looks like the dozens of other fishing boats moored in this Japanese harbor. But its builders say it is the world's first hybrid fishing trawler. By switching between oil and electric-powered propulsion, it uses up to a third less fuel than conventional boats.

And what is the point when the fishing industries of the world take a limited resource and over deplete it? A symptom aided yes but the problem has not changed. Over Fishing.

I agree with UV Japan for one is over fishing all over the globe to such an extend that local fisheries in other parts of the world has to be rationed.

This new vessels will just put them further outside of the law enforcement and environment protection capabilities of third world countries.

They also don't seem to care about innocent bystanders like sea turtles being caught and wiped out in the trailing nets.

Japan and other countries should have a hard look at the sustainability of their elaborate fishing operations.

The old saying of "give a man a fish and he will eat for a day but teach him how to fish , , , , " also needs desperate changing.

I agree to the point...

World is already facing the bad effects of technology ( Depletion in ozone layer, Global warming etc), the point to be thought over is how effectively we can balance technology and human greed.

Getting more fishes for my Lunch is good, but the question is what about Supper..?

The Japanese I know would have a Sea turtles and Dolphins for dinner. The problem comes from the shear scale they and many others exploit the oceans

When I was a kid we would get King Crab that the leg sections were well over 2 foot. The crab would have to be about 10 foot across. I don't see any large King Crab anymore. Salomon would choke the streams even with the dams. Smelt runs were dipped with nets out of the rivers and filled wash tubs. Now you can't catch enough to be worth the time. Shrimp boats have turned much of the Gulf into a flat desert landscape.

Fish farms don't raise the food for their fish they use ground fish that is un sell able for food use. We take but return little. It is catching up to us.

Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day

Teach a man to fish and he will eat for a lifetime.

Teach a man to raise fish for the good of the fish and the man and he can feed a village for many lifetimes. -Brad
