So the scofflaws of the world will be able to avoid running the red lights with cameras? HOW very useful!

Actually, that is a great idea. Think about it. If you knew in advance for absolute certain that you would get a $150 fine if you do not stop at the red light; would you still blow through it?

I have always contended that red light cameras would have a nearly 100% effectiveness if that intersection was unmistakably marked as a red-light camera enforced intersection.

Hiding that fact from motorists plainly proves that the city or government controlling agency places revenue enhancement over the safety of the public.

Next time you go into an intersection ask yourself; would you feel better not getting T-boned or would you feel better getting T-boned knowing that a hidden camera will fine the offender?

I suspect that if I did get T-boned, the offender would still be there in person when the police arrived, a picture would be superfluous. I concur, these devices are NOT intended for public safety nearly as much as they are for revenue enhancement. Which is what prompted my initial comment; scofflaws will know which lights to behave at, and will zoom thru the rest as usual. People who don't intend to fail to stop won't need this feature, so for whom is it intended?

I am happier crossing through an intersection where all people know, without exception, that they will get a hefty fine for running a red light.

Well I suppose the next move will be states outlawing the use or possession of GPS like they have radar detecters. If you get caught your GPS will be suspenad to testify against you. I can see it now, your track history will show your speed, time and location since the last time you cleared the history. It will show the location of every stop sign and wheather a complete stop was made. Yep the prosecutors job just got easyer and your pockets are getting lighter. What's next? J.Conway

Jerrell Conway said "Well I suppose the next move will be states outlawing the use or possession of GPS like they have radar detecters."

NJ my home state is already "cashing in" on GPS units. If you get stopped for any violation (even a burned out bulb) or a spot check you will get a ticket if the GPS or any other thing is attached to your windshield with the usual suction cup type mount. They call it "obstructed vision" I got nailed during a spot check last year for a rear view mirror "hang tag" parking pass that hung down less than one inch below my mirror and was less than three inches wide. I paid $58 to the sleepy little hamlet of Metuchen NJ a town well known in these parts as being overzealous enforcers of minor laws to say the least. NJ uses the EZ Pass System and the transponders they sell attach to the glass. So far they don't ticket the EZ Pass users for obstructed vision.

Most if not all new cars now have an "event recorder" that holds 10 seconds or so of operational data before an air bag deployment or near deployment. These recorders record speed, braking, and seat belt use or non use and probably more. A while ago I saw a catalog from a Police and EMS supply outfit called Galls. They had a kit to hook up a laptop (at the scene of the crash) so they can download this data and use it against you. They should have to get a warrant to snatch your info. The catalog implied it is legal for the police to do so. I suppose the courts will be dealing with this in the near future. I am proud to be a resident of New ( it's all about the $money$) Jersey. Yeah......... Right. Ed

I'm surprised that an outside agency can sell event recorder readers to police departments. Dealerships can't even get them, someone has to bring one from a factory or zone office to read them completely, usually in response to warranty/insurance issues. Wonder if the manufacturers have caved in to keep the cops happy?
