Can Nitrogen Be Used To Combat Climate Change?

Posted January 09, 2009 9:29 AM

From Scientific American:

After more than a decade of research, a team of scientists has found that by releasing one pollutant into the environment, we might help capture another. Findings from one of the National Science Foundation's longest-running studies show that adding nitrogen to soil prompts northern hardwood forests to absorb more heat-trapping carbon dioxide. As the atmosphere's most abundant element, nitrogen plays a significant role in ecosystems, and one to which scientists and policymakers are paying greater attention.

Oh fantastic, took some think tank a decade to figure out what every farmer already knows, add fertilizer, plants grow, amazing who would have thought???

One has to wonder how much they received in grant money, read tax dollars to come up with this breakthrough!!!

Sarcasm is only one of the services I offer.

Next, they will discover that the drain-off from the nitrogen increases the algae in lakes and reservoirs.

Maybe we should create a think tank and apply for millions in grants to find out if that is indeed true

We could also finally solve that age old question; does ice actually melt over 32 degrees F?

If a tree does something obvious in a forest, does anyone see it?

Did they miss the phosphorous and potassium ? Adding those two with nitrogen may bring back ice age and we may call it ice age-3

You guys are slow to twig to the essentials: until the "right" learned heads get it, nature just could not possibly have done, that nature does naturally. But, hey not the results are important, but the road traveled to it, or some such. I just learned this wisdom recently, am still confused.

You are correct. Only when the politicians (read administrators) get it will nature be allowed to proceed. No one ever said you had to have an eye-queue above that of an earthworm to be a politician.

Sorry, I didn't mean to marginalize "earthworms", their vote might count in the next election.

Why just nitrogen? Why don't we dump everything into the environment and see what the results are?

Oh wait - we already did that.

It is expected to go below zero this week in midwestern US. We are freezing our buns off and some pinhead wants to cool it down more?

Don't let them have any sharp objects!

I know how you feel, -13c here during the day -20's c at night.

Far too cold for a civilized country, and to keep things interesting we have a transit strike now over 30 days old, traffic in the a.m. and p.m. rush is more like a parking lot than rush.

Glad my commute is from the coffee machine to my shop, about 30 seconds 8-)

Your moniker reminds me of this recent faux-news story (lower right):

Now that is too funny.

I got the name years ago, seems every time I go out to play off road I hit a tree.

Does not seem to matter what it is I am driving, it all started way back when I was racing motorcycles, then mountain bikes, and on to four wheel drive trucks, if a tree was there I will hit it. I even got one in Death Valley, probably to only tree there. Last November I managed to hit one, granted very small, in the Anza-Borrego desert in Southern California.

The fool things just keep jumping out in front of me, doesn't matter how fast or slow I am going, they always get me.

The name came from a buddy who commented; Dancing with trees again were you?

It has sort of stuck ever since.
