Flying Car Ready To Take Off

Posted January 12, 2009 8:48 AM

From Slashdot:

The first flying automobile, equally at home in the sky or on the road, is scheduled to take to the air next month. If it survives its first test flight, the Terrafugia Transition, which can transform itself from a two-seater road car to a plane in 15 seconds, is expected to land in showrooms in about 18 months' time. Terrafugia claims it will be able to fly up to 500 miles on a single tank of unleaded petrol at a cruising speed of 115mph. Even at $200,000 per automobile, they have already received 40 orders.

Traffic in stereo - I like the play on words and the mental image it generates! Thanks, cnpower!

There have been others. Wonder if this one will be more successful. One of the original flying cars is on display in the Boeing Air museum in Seattle.

I don't think they'll sell many of them. For almost $200,000, I could buy a real airplane AND a real car.

And since it uses the same engine to fly AND drive, required maintenance inspections and rebuilds will probably make it impractical.

"Flying Car Ready To Take Off "- Pardon my scepticism but I've been reading that since the 1960's, and it is usually followed by 'How to Order' and 'Where to Send the Money'. Of course, those articles were followed by predictions that by the year 2000 we would probably be ruled by robots and artificial intelligence, and we all will look like the Jetsons.

If flying cars did take off, I can't imagine the FAA or the DOT would like it if we land one of those on the street in front of our workplace in the morning and it seems like a very expensive vehicle to drive to work. I guess I don't see an adaptable infrastructure for these.
