UK Fungi Get Protection Strategy

Posted January 12, 2009 8:55 AM

From BBC News | Science & Environment | UK Edition:

A strategy to protect the UK's fungi species has been set up by 16 of the nation's leading conservation and research organisations. They hope to ensure the long-term protection of "the forgotten kingdom" by learning more about the organisms. It will also bring more than half of the UK's remaining taxonomic mycologists together under one roof.

Just for a bit of topical aside, Downs House (where Darwin wrote up a lot of his stuff) is opening up very soon.

Where...............He was a fun guy ! (I shall slap myself for being the one to do such a corny joke)

"Don't most fungi prefer dark, damp places?"

They do indeed, and these are no exception (although you'd think they believe they are[1]). Insofar as your knowledge of the care and feeding of fungi goes, you've evidently been talking to the Groom of the Stool[2].

[1] The Royal Flash is special in that the photons emerge very slowly, in procession, coronation-style.

Maybe not the largest - the creosote bush is a clonal shrub, and it is hypothesized that regularly spaced plants covering many hundreds of square miles of desert may actually be one plant.

http://www.biology.ed.ac.uk/research/groups/jdeacon/desertecology/creosote.htm

Aspen trees are also clonal, and colonies can spread for perhaps miles, but are not likely to cover more than one mountainside. But as far as the big fungus you linked to goes, I guess it just mushroomed, didn't it?

Both are huge, yes, but are they British? If not they'll have to submit the appropriate immigration forms before being considered for protection under UK's new strategy.

Or, you could simply buy them all condoms.

I can't believe all swamps are the same - it's a bit of a cover-all term isn't it ?

So......do you have endangered fungi in the states ? This is yet another thread where Brit Media is the source (OK, it's a Brit story, but it happens even with American stuff), there don't seem to be enough direct American feeds on many blogs.

When I was a kid, we'd often go collecting mushrooms. They were all over the place. I guess that's all gone thanks to chemical farming.. I haven't got the skill to know which stuff is safe, but many places in the UK are good hunting grounds for those who know what they're doing. Some people make a living collecting the exotic stuff and sending it up to London restaurants. As far as I can tell, they do it in an environmentally friendly way, not overdoing any given area. Having said that, I'm not sure you could over-pick mushrooms (?).

I didn't mean to imply all swamps are the same - they're not. But they all have some similar characteristics.

We do have at least one fungus that's probably endangered, for the same reason, harvesting, that you mentioned. The morel is much sought after, and you can overdo it - if there aren't enough left to mature and drop spores, next year's crop may not appear at all. We used to get them by the grocery sack (paper ones) when I was a kid. Nowadays there are people who make a living hauling them to restaurants and markets, so they are becoming scarce, I'm told. Most varieties can be cultivated, but I've never heard of anyone doing that successfully with morels (see below).

Re: UK Fungi Get Protection Strategy

The trick is knowing how to pick them. If the stump is left behind it will rot and possibly infect the myccorhizal root system. In the wild the 'roots' can take many years to grow before producing the shroom. It also depends on the moisture content each species needs to survive and I hear it's been rather dry in England for some time.

I also pick wild mushrooms and have noticed the past two years have been exceptional due to increased rainfall and a cooler summer. For a number of years prior there were hardly any to be found.

Been watching some of the archaeology coming out of Merry 'ol. Fascinating stuff. The GPR mapping is amazing!

When I was a kid I found some tiny Roman coins, tiles and pottery shards coming out've a construction dig. My father tried to get the dig stopped. Didn't exactly endear himself with the town council and was ignored. Bit differrent today....gratifying to see.

It would all rest on Cleos' inclinations, don't you think?

St. Agnes of Rome is invoked for chastity - and sometimes Thomas Aquinas. Frankly, I think crocodile dung would do as much good...

That certainly reasures the meaning of 'Great Minds Think Alike".

Contrast that with "Small Minds Think The Same".

Along that line of thought, I'm sure you've noted that as usual this thread has mushroomed in the "off-topic" post category. Not counting puns like this, I'd bet without looking that there are fewer than 1/3 "on-topic" posts here. We have no shame, have we?

True, but some of the on-topic stuff is good. The fact that it's hidden makes it better - forces the lazy humourless ones to take part.

Hopefully you don't have to cosine for nuts. I'd hate to see a squirrel get caught up in trapezoids.

Yes, that'd be a sin. Not to go off on a tangent, but how exactly does this protect British fungi, again? By keeping us too busy punning to go hunt 'em down?

With all of the hyphae and mycelia it takes to be an active fungus these days, it's a seven-day wonder anything at all gets done. But that's a different angle...

The official term in Canada is wetlands. All wetland and headwater areas are protected from development and are under the Conservation authority. Some delicate wetland ecosystems are also subject to no public access relying rather on educational tours, artsy types and birdwatchers to stay on the marked trails.
