Caffeine Can Cause Hallucinations

Posted January 14, 2009 8:01 AM

From Yahoo! News: Science News:

People who take in the caffeine equivalent of three cups of brewed coffee (or seven cups of instant) are more likely to hallucinate, a new study suggests. The researchers found that people with a caffeine intake that high, whether it came from coffee, tea, chocolate or caffeinated energy drinks or pills, had a three-times-higher tendency to hear voices and see things that were not there than those who consumed the equivalent of a half-cup of brewed coffee (or one cup of instant coffee).

Three times higher huh? So for someone that doesn't hallucinate at all, 3*0 is still 0, so it doesn't matter. But for those schizophrenics out there, steer clear of the coffee... oh, and be sure to take your meds.

Hello Bricky,

Can I give you an example of an hallucination?

I was on some tabs for something. Medicated they were. I was seeing spiders the size of truck tires! They would creep from a tile crack in the wall and I would be backed into a corner trying not to eaten by these 'so real' animals! Two months after I come off that hallucination stopped.

Now I get an Auditory Hallucination where I here a door bell buzz as I wake up. I do not even have a door buzzer!

I went to the doctors about the spider one, and could see the same things coming from behind a blind. The doctor noticed the true fear and watched as I started to tremble.

I tell you If you know something is impossible it still scares the s-i- out of me. The buzzer one is annoying because I keep running to the door as I wake. That is when you know it is a hallucination. When it is not possible cos I don't have a buzzer!

Take care.........

Hello Bricky,

A really scary hallucination happened as I had a seizure. I walked through the garden to the bottom. And at the same time, I watch myself walk down the garden from three different angles! The trickcyclists had had of it before but it was not common. Something to do with how the brainwaves are soon after a seizure.

Had me worried though, and it was a week before I told my doctor who sent me to hospital from his surgery by ambulance. Had it happen one other time but they could never say exactly what caused it.

Take care...........

Of course it causes hallucinations. We all know this. We rely on it!

Our coffee-induced dreamscape is what makes facing yet another morning shackled to our desks possible. If it weren't for the green unicorns prancing gleefully across my keyboard every morning, I wouldn't answer my e-mail.

If it weren't for the invisible python insidiously winding around my boss's neck in its attempt to strangle the last breath from his corpulent carcass before he can say "Uhhhhhhhhh..." for the 100th time during the afternoon meeting, I wouldn't bother to attend.

And that's just a couple of the myriad ways caffeine makes a wonderful difference in our lives.

I guess that explains that little elf that keeps telling me to burn things. No more Vault for me!

Hello Wild Idea,

Couldn't resist!..........

I can't get in on the fun. I'm one of those 2 percenters, that drugs have the opposite effect on on. If I drink 10 cups of java, I promptly fall asleep.

You too?! Thank god. All this time I thought I was alone. Novocaine doesn't even make me tingle and I drink a pot of very strong tea before I go to bed (and I sleep like roadkill).

Trust me, that beats the daylights out of NOT hearing or seeing things that ARE there!

Listen. Don't think this is an easy explanation of the leprechauns the next time you visit Ireland....that's caused by the copious quantities of creamy pints of Guinness

I'm starting to think I need to add MORE caffeine into my daily diet... may make all those boring meetings just a tad bit more exciting!
