Do Humans Communicate Via Pheromones? The Jury Is Still Out

Posted January 16, 2009 9:08 AM

From Discover Magazine | RSS:

When two people get knocked off their feet by physical chemistry, their friends may offer this standard glib explanation: "It's all about the pheromones." But in fact, 50 years after the term "pheromones" was coined by biologists to refer to the chemical messages passed within many insect and mammal species, researchers still haven't found proof that humans emit or detect such chemicals. In an essay in Nature [subscription required] marking the 50-year milestone, zoologist Tristram Wyatt sums up the state of the research, and reminds the gullible not to buy any love potions that boast of their pheromone content.

50 years of study?

My my science just is not up to the job. Lets see, Friday night, the pub, lota of drinks, lots of dancing, lots of bodies rubbing & bouncing off each other.

And nobody has studied this, i mean you do need someone who has a nose that works?

I would be a willing subject, if i was not married

Everytime they tried to do a study, they got drunk and ended up in bed with the other researchers.

I for one am certain that some girls are hotter than others, and suspect that pheromones are involved. Certainly perfumes are known to work. In one case I ended up in bed with a woman who was wearing the same perfume as the one my girlfriend had given me, and I was wearing. It is a hard to find boutique perfume called Jazz, and I recommend it, if you see it, buy some and do your own experiments.

Pheromones definitely work - I am not attracted to women who smell bad!

I believe the issue is not whether humans incorporate subliminal chemical messaging in their interactions, but, rather, what are the critical chemical substances that communicate such things as aggresiveness, fear, joy, mating receptivity, social status, geographic origins and other such critical messages. I suspect not all of the critical aromas are self-generated, but rather are the product of our symbiotic co-travelers (i.e., the populations of bacteria we accumulate as we pas through life). The modern excessive focus on personal hygein and the use of artificial scents can result in sending an inappropriate message...

Hygiene aside:

If you have good smelling facilities, and do use them with thought applied. When the lady is "ready" you will know it. Body language, mental agreement, can send conflicting messages. But the ladies feminine smell can override other signals and tell you what she really thinks.

Dated slightly older women when i was single and applied scientific principals to getting what all young men dream of. worked many times for me.

Had a young woman I worked with that was not clean. She did not smell bad but her hair was oily and snowed. Her clothes looked like they need washed more often than they were. She was very plain and wore baggy non discript cloths and was meek even shy.

Other than trying not to make her even more insecure I just ignored her. I keep getting very randy at work at times. Very distracting.

It took a few months to figure out that this woman I did not care to be around was the source of the pheromones that made me rutty as a cat.

My wife thought my predicament was very humorous. Having met her at work funtions, my wife already knew my thoughts or lack there of about this woman.

She did tell me to go talk to her before coming home a few times. More of a joke to tell me what to expect when I got home.

There you go. Another fallen on experiment. Smart wife. There you go, evidence. No arguing with facts.

What I have learned about pheromones in humans is most of the opposite sex is not attracted to yours. Only a small fraction are responding to them. Of that group some are repelled not attracted.

The justification given by those studies is that it is your antibodies telling possible mates if it is a great match or a bad match for survival of your potential offspring. Sounded a little far fetched or a brilliant leap in logic to me. We may even know in a hundred years or so.

Nor is the effect powerful enough to make you sleep with some one you wouldn't sleep with under normal conditions. I will make them stand out if you do find them a suitable partner or they just seem to irritate you.

They are only a small of the interactions going on and how can you understand the interactions by removing them from the intended environment? Would not your conclusions be out of context?

Just a thought or two
