Prototype: Cellphones as Credit Cards? Americans Must Wait

Posted January 26, 2009 9:37 AM

From NYT > Technology:

Imagine a technology that lets you pay for products just by waving your cellphone over a reader. The technology exists, and, in fact, people in Japan have been using it for the last five years to pay for everything from train tickets to groceries to candy in vending machines. And in small-scale trials around the world, including in Atlanta, New York and the San Francisco Bay Area, nearly everyone has liked using this form of payment.

I don't want one.

"The risk of account fraud from mobile payments is "small,"

Ya, right. Seems like every week we hear about a security breech involving credit card information. And each new one is bigger than the last. There are hackers sitting in boiler rooms right now devising a new scam to rip the public off.

I hate credit cards anyway. Yes, there are times when there is no other choice, but I pay cash whenever I can.

Mystery charges, annual fees, etc. Then go and try to have an erroneous "service charge" removed. You'll be on the phone for hours, and have to do it again next month, when, even though they told you it was removed, it's still there.

AAAARRRRRRRGGGGGG!!!!!!!!!

But the credit card phone? Someone's working on a pocket device to steal your info, right now.

I'm with you. I have already been through the horror of dealing with the card company when my card number was somehow used to buy stuff overseas. They wanted to know if I was sure that I didn't go to South America and order, over the internet, a gym's worth of exercise equipment and send it to an undisclosed location in Germany. It was very difficult to convince them that I would remember a trip like that.

The thought of now being able to do this with an electronic device that can already be scanned from a distance is very frightening. COUNT ME OUT!
