Let the Machine Builder Decide

Posted January 27, 2009 8:18 AM

Machine builders need to produce their products as effectively as they can, and as time goes on, software becomes a more dominant part of the intellectual property. Therefore when it comes to drives and controls, it should be the machine builder, and not the end user, who decides which brand and product to use. He should not be tied down by an end user who specifies a particular make of control equipment. Besides, aren't most systems open architecture anyway?

No, No, and No.

The entire purpose is to create something that the end user wants, needs, and finds valuable. thats why they give you their money. What good is intellectual property if no one buys it?

The customer as always right, and is always going to buy that which meets their needs, so it will be the customer who decides. Even in the days when there was only one car manufacturer, and the only color was black, the customer demanded and demanded until they got their way. choice.

No, most systems are not open architecture, not in software, not in controls, not even in measuring systems or fasteners.

No, most systems are not open architecture, not in software, not in controls, not even in measuring systems or fasteners.

Some systems are proprietary. I can give an example. Flow International which manufactures High Pressure Water Jets, has proprietary software to operate their machines which they try to sell, salesmen would even go as far as saying the machines don't run on convention G-Code. THAT IS FALSE.

They (FLOW INT.) are finding that, it may be worth the while to adapt to the customers infrastructure, At a cost, of course. Which I agree, although this can have exceptions.
