Emperor Penguins Face Extinction

Posted January 27, 2009 9:07 AM

From BBC News | Science & Environment | UK Edition:

Emperor penguins, whose long treks across Antarctic ice to mate have been immortalised by Hollywood, are heading towards extinction, scientists say. Based on predictions of sea ice extent from climate change models, the penguins are likely to see their numbers plummet by 95% by 2100. That corresponds to a decline to just 600 breeding pairs in the world.

Are we really going to worry about these savage monsters going extinct? Sure they look cute and cuddly when they are young;

But very soon they grow up and become vicious merciless predators who are waaay too organized for my liking;

If you are foolish enough to turn your back on them they can form up quickly:

And God help you if you give them time to conscript;

I say the enemy of my penguin enemy is my global warming friend.

My guess is that they will find a place to mate when ice recedes justa as they found a place to mate in the presence of ice. They adapted once they may adapt again.

Adaption can be defined as natural selection (aka. they almost go extinct and those that are able to survive will become the new penguins in town). So, by facing extinction they are adapting....rough world. They may look cuddly, but their beaks are menacing!
