U.S. Becomes Top Wind Producer, Solar Next

Posted February 03, 2009 8:56 AM

From Scientific American:

The United States overtook Germany as the biggest producer of wind power last year, new figures showed, and will likely take the lead in solar power this year, analysts said on Monday. Even before an expected "Obama bounce" from a new President who has vowed to boost clean energy, U.S. wind power capacity surged 50 percent last year to 25 gigwatts (GW) -- enough to power more than five million homes. With all the hot air being produced by politicians, celebrities and special interest groups, of course there'll be more than enough wind to produce that much energy.

Yes, but all the gloom forecasted by some in the political and economic arenas will no doubt obscure the sun, making the panels useless.

So it's a wash, electricity-wise.

The energy contract that is funding this currently came during a Bush administration--Obama has been predicted (API article a week after the inauguration)to cut all new alternative energy spending due to the economic woes we are enduring. I also heard, second hand, that there is new emphasis on clean coal.

Only time will tell, though.

Skip the solar cells. Set up the windmills in Washington D.C. Plenty of hot air blowing around there.

Even though the capacity is 25 gigawatts the reality is that they will be lucky to actually produce 10 usable gigawatts because of normal low wind times. Some of that will be waste because of the storage problems. Wind generators produce power when the wind blows not always at peak usage times when it is needed. How do you store wind power produced off peak?

Oregon is saying now that it is the leading producer of solar cells world wide. Of course that info comes from politicians.
