New Energy Club: Renewables Only

Posted February 14, 2009 8:33 AM

This is an idea we've seen kicked around for awhile that has finally come into fruition. A global body to foster collaboration on renewable energy technology and climate change mitigation became reality on January 26, 2009, in Bonn, Germany. The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) was formed when 75 signatory states agreed to provide leadership and expertise for a massive scale-up of renewables. A laudable beginning, but lacking the U.S., Russia, China, and India as members. Will they make a difference without these heavy hitters, or is it good night, IRENA?

1. Who are supposed to be members? I suppose, from your naration, it is state membership and no personal membership.

2. In case of India, does the message went to appropriate level? As I know, india IS interested in such activity and actively participating in such activity. In fact, India is providing leadership in some of the similar activities.

3. May I help in this matter? You need any information?

Is this similar to the International Atomic Energy Agency, or is this in any way attached to the UN? If it is not, it might have some legitimacy and thus hope. If it is, let it die a quick death.

"The basic novelty of IRENA will lie in the fact that it will be a fully grown international governmental organisation dedicated to the promotion of renewable energy open to all UN countries. The Agency will also involve stakeholders from the energy industry, academia, institutions and civil society...For the time being, the idea to make IRENA a new United Nations or United Nations-affiliated organisation does not seem to be the most appropriate option. In order to ensure the Agency's swift operational start it is beneficial to set it up as an independent organisation. However, in the long term the integration of IRENA into the United Nations should be considered."

With the exception of nuclear energy (including our sun), all energy sources are renewable. It's simply a matter of time.

Am I the only one who thinks the term "renewable energy" to be absurd?

Anybody heard of entropy?

Dear Brave Sir Robin... its a generalization...all things are relative.. but in this case, I guess that things are relative to a human lifespan.. if it occurs inside one's lifespan, then it is considered renewable.. general classification.. where would we be without classifications..lol.. anyway. you are only confused because you belong to the immortals.

I know and understand. I guess I just prefer the term alternative energy sources but even then hydro-power is a well-established energy source that is "renewable" but would we consider it to be "alternative"? I won't even go into the environmental effects of hydro-dams, but I do like the lakes they create for recreational uses. We can't really say zero-emissions either because some "renewable" or "alternative" energy sources involve burning wood or other plant products or the methane produced from waste streams.

Cheers !!

If you don't like the damage that dams do, then maybe you will find some value in this idea

(the concept is still evolving... but it does have a significant advantage over river based dams in the damage and displacement regard)
