Anonymous Caller? That's What You Think

Posted February 17, 2009 8:47 AM

From Wired: Top Stories:

Don't bother dialing *-6-7 anymore. A new, free service set for launch Tuesday allows cellphone users to unmask your Caller ID when you think you have it blocked. Critics say domestic violence victims will suffer, while the company behind the new service insists it finally puts you in control of your own phone.

Thank you for this post. Good idea. I just signed up for this service. It took me about 30 sec.

I dont see what the big deal is. If you dont recognize the # dont answer the phone.

Also, WTF is up with cell phones anyway?? The only advantage I can see to having one is if you are in the middle of nowhere and your car breaks down or you want to look at porn at work.

I have never had a pager or a cell phone. I think it is a big fad and a huge waste of money. I have an anserwing machine and it works great plus I dont have to care about who is calling if they leave no message.

When I'm in the middle of nowhere and someone's truck breaks down, they call me. Company pays for the phone and customers call me, it is called customer service.

As a test engineer the cell phone is invaluable, as I am all over the plant at different times of the day/night. An added plus is that I can talk to someone while actually observing equipment, rather than having to walk away and describe it from memory and notes.

I work in Tech Support. When I am on-call, the cell phone keeps me from being tied to my house. I can go places and do things and still answer calls. I have a laptop fopr the same purpose. My wife has a cell phone for "emergencies".

Steve, your missing the point. Before someone dials you, if they push *69, it comes up "unknown" on your screen. This program allows a way for you to see who actually has called.

If you don't need a cell-phone, good for you. I truly wish I did not also. However I find it an indispensable tool, that makes my life much easier.

"I think it is a big fad and a huge waste of money."

I'm sure it is for many people, but not me.

Hey, I'm with you on that, although I do have a cell-phone. I have two as a matter of fact, and I keep them both off the net, unless I leave the house or my workplace.

I mainly keep both subscribed, and on me when I'm out, as some means of redundancy for a case emergency

Today, most phones have a ring-off switch.

This way if you phone me and my cell is off you know I'm home, or at work.

If I don't answer at home, I'm asleep, or don't want to be bothered.

If I don't answer at work, I don't want to be bothered.

Even when one of my cell phones is on, I don't answer every call, only the ones I'm interested in.

As for the rest ?

You guessed it...

I would like to know who keeps calling me from "out of area", "unlisted" and "800-" numbers at all hours of the day and night and on weekends. Some are cell phone calls that do not show a number that I know and a name would help. Others I want to permanently block, the telemarketers, the computer calls, the harassment calls. Unfortunately I need to know who and where they are in order to block them.

As for the women who might be in danger, they can use any phone far from where they live or have their address blocked on a cell phone. So what if the abusive ex can see their name and phone number, without an address they can't find them easily. It should be no problem for the phone company to block that information only in those cases. Women's shelters, social service agencies and public courthouses should provide a phone for the mandated contacts. Perhaps there could be some kind of call forwarding to a remote phone which would then place the call.

How traceable is a call made on Skype or Vonage through a computer?
