How Believable are "Green" Ads?

Posted February 21, 2009 8:43 AM

With thousands of new products being advertised today as "green" or having green packaging, how does a consumer know if they're telling the truth? They're probably not, says John Kalkowski: he cites a survey made by TerraChoice Environmental Marketing that determined 99% of advertising claims could be misleading. The Federal Trade Commission is supposed to protect the public from false advertising claims. Should the FTC be publishing more stringent guidelines for so-called green advertising?

Sadly advertising claims for *green* are no different than any other claims, mostly hogwash.

Look what EnergyStar* descended into before you reach for regulation tho. Or LEEDS and the mess it has turned into.

I work for a PVC extrusion company that is working very hard to make a product better than they advertise.

I am new to this line of work and have only been here just over a year. My ability to learn and work practices have placed me in the lab by myself with a Brabender and XRF analyzer. Please forgive the question.

What do you mean by the mess LEEDS turned into?

One of our products is based on post consumer and industrial content being reclaimed into the product. To give you hope, we are working to increase our content and have a third party certify these claims.

I have seen some competitors claims and inspected the product. I have found the word "Spin" is not only political. They were not technically lying.

I would like any information you can offer. I learn around task specific activities. My last occupation was OTR driver for 13 years. It became difficult to get up in the morning.

Thanks.
