Tips and Tricks to Maintaining Your Automobile

Posted March 03, 2009 12:00 AM by Jaxy

Apart from your house, you car is the one of the most expensive items you invest in. It is only natural to keep the car in tip-top shape in order to get the most out of it. I have compiled a list of basic maintenance tips to keep your automobile in good shape.

Check Your Fluids!

When checking fluids in your car, it is very important to park the car on level ground so the fluids are accurately measured. Also, fluids like engine coolant should never be checked when the car engine is hot. In other words, do not check all of your fluids right after you drive your car. The oil and automatic transmission fluids come with dipsticks that you can use to monitor the fluid levels. Make sure to wipe the dipstick before you reinsert for measurement.

There are lines marking the full and empty levels on the oil dipstick. The transmission fluid dipstick has two hash-marked ranges. The range toward the end of the stick is where the fluid level should be if the engine is cool. The range higher up on the dipstick is where the fluid level should be if the engine is hot. It is recommended that the oil is changed once every 3,000 – 5,000 miles. It is a good idea to track at what mile you last changed the oil. Changing your oil is often more necessary if you do a lot of driving in the city or in extreme climates.

Check Your Tires!

The tires are also important to monitor. Having a pressure gauge in the glove compartment is an easy way to make a quick check of tire pressure if you believe a tire is lower than another. Rotating your tires every two oil changes is a good idea in order to make sure that your tires wear evenly. If you go to a garage to get this done, it is also a good idea to get your tires balanced.

The depth of the tread is also good to monitor. It is said that if you place an upside down penny in the thread and can see President Lincoln's whole head, then it is time to change the tires. Some say that this method isn't very precise and that a tire thread gauge is a good tool to use. Treads less than 2/32 of an inch is illegal.

Thanks for posting this, Jaxy. It reminds me it's time to rotate my tires, too. I didn't do that as often as I should have with the last set, and they wore out more quickly than I would have liked.

Good Point. I have posted resource links (originally forgotten - Oops!) that describe more procedures that would be helpful in maintaining your automobile. I didn't mean to put down the importance of filters, but I hope that people hoping to learn more will use the resource links to expand their knowledge.

I tried washing my wife (which she grudgingly put up with), but when I got out the Turtle Wax, she threw me out of the bathroom.

Thanks Jaxy,

Considerations for maintaining a vehicle should include checking your mechanical aptitude, maybe taking a short course at the local college or high school isn't a bad idea.

Vehicles and thoughts of them have changed since I first bought one. To me they are a piece of equipment designed to convey from point to point.

Anyone remember these:

a line sheet they were called, they were used in the production line to accurately associate the parts. I can image the sheet would be much longer if available today but the knowledge gained would be a fine place to begin understanding your vehicle.

I still do care for them as equipments and they respond predictably almost always

Gloves go in the glove compartment all else goes in a sack in the trunk and a tray under the seat.

Putting fresh air in the tires is a way to prevent corrosive gases from eating tires inside out.

Wash'em top and bottom every two weeks or less but don't pet'em

Air fresheners aren't needed if vehicle is clean

If gas is sold from a retail dispensing pump it has techroline and 5%-10% ethanol will prevent water in gas

Use oil/greases according to the API or MIL-spec indicated and at the frequency stated in maintenance schedule

Light bulbs don't have a predictable service life so keep a spare of each

Keep dry inside or the windows will fog easily

Pets and small children ride in carriers or seating designed for their size

Be Careful what you wear, ring around the seat doesn't look neat.

If the phone rings stop safely and answer it.
