Philips Master LED Bulb: Enlightened When On or Off [Lighting]

Posted March 09, 2009 3:10 PM

From Gizmodo:

This July, Philips will release an LED bulb that's ready for mainstream consumption, the Master LED. Fitting in a standard bulb socket, the mercury-free Master LED bulb sips just 7W while burning up to 45,000 hours, or about 30x the length of a normal bulb. It's actually already available in parts of Europe but with the proper retail availability, I could see an LED light with this form factor exciting the mainstream US public, couldn't you?

"I could see an LED light with this form factor exciting the mainstream US public, couldn't you?"

No. Not the U.S. Public.

LED substitutes for incandescent and CFL lamps have been available for several years now just about everywhere else in the world, but you don't find them on store shelves here. Heck, not that many years ago you had to look real hard to find a CFL, and none could be had at a decent price.

Look, it's not like we're not making progress here in the States, but we can take only so much innovation at once, ya know? Just visit a Lowe's, Home Depot or any other mainstream hardware or general store and see how many LED-based lamps they carry. How many is that?

Zip. Nada.

PS: Say, can I borrow a couple of candles? My neighbor's horse stepped on my kerosene lamp.

What do you mean they aren't available here? Walmart in our area carries LED lights that fit in a standard socket. I've been buying them for the last couple of months. Most of my outside lights have been switched to LEDs. And my ceiling fans also use LEDs. I've been waiting to see a regular looking light bulb shaped LED to be available to replace my other bulbs as they burn out.

I don't buy CFLs they just don't seem to work very well for me. Sometimes the CFLs don't fit properly in the socket because of the transformer part is to big.And the flood light versions aren't made to work outdoors.

CFLs have made a lot of progress since the original ones (which weren't so compact ;-). The ones I use now have a transformer that is between 1.6 & 1.8 inches in diameter and seem to fit everywhere. I also have PAR38 floods rates for outdoor use by UL.

They're all from Costco and made in China. Sigh.

This last weekend I was at Costco and saw LED flood lights in both large outside format and a smaller size for kitchens, etc. IIRC they were about $11. They were made by Lights of America (and of course made in China).
