Companies Waste $2.8 Billion Per Year Powering Unused PCs

I used to diligently turn my PC off when not in use (both home and office). Then I learned that the reason that my monitors were dying prematurely was that very practice, as when I turned the computer off, I followed by turning off the monitor. How much of that $ 36.00 cost is due to the computer and how much is due to the monitor?

Why don't you electronic geniuses invent a monitor that will last in high humidity environments wihout being run all the time?

For those who don't know what humidity is like when hurricane Ike hit the temperature was 89 degrees. So was the dewpoint. Since we had more than 5,000,000 people sitting around in the dark after the hurricane I know that their monitors were for the most part off. I'm sure that some of the hurricane damaged monitors died from the days without power rather than any immediate hurricane cause.

One would think that the PC itself would use more power than the monitor. since there are more motors and the like in the PC. Most new monitors have a sleep mode now anyway. So when the PC is off the monitor sleeps using less power.

Thats not saying it would be enough to completely keep the humidity out of the monitor, but i would think it would help

In the old days (say 10 years ago) I would turn off my computer(s) to save energy. I still have a couple of old computers running Windows 3.1 and 95. I can still turn them off when I don't need them. They boot in just a few seconds, and turn off just as fast. The problem now is that newer computers with newer operating systems have so much stuff running in the background that it often takes minutes, not seconds to turn them on and off. The constant expansion of the consumer friendly features in the operating system are part of the problem. Time needed to launch anti-virus programs is another, and the whole zoo full of critters that populate my task manager adds to the problem. This is a pretty lame excuse for leaving a computer on while I eat lunch, but it's the best I can come up with.
