French space agency to launch UFO archive

Posted January 03, 2007 7:24 AM

From Engadget:

With the responsibility for training their astronauts turned over to Europe what's a French space agency to do? Become the official Internet source for UFO sightings, naturally. See, according to Jacques Arnould of France's Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales space agency, CNES will publish their archive of some 1,600 UFO sightings and other foo fightin' phenomena before mid-February. The on-line archives will consist of about 6,000 reports (many relating to the same incident) filed by pilots and the public alike over the last 30 years. That gives you about two months to hone your conspiracy theories...

Great news!

Too bad its in French, but I'm sure it will be translated.

Many other governments are more open on this issue than the U.S., but the test will be if they remain open over time. Certainly, the French wouldn't be likely to clamp down on our government's account, unlike some others.

I wonder if I jump on the conspiracy theory band wagon too? Talking of cover ups and all that...........did anyone take the time to ask Roswell his/ her/ it's opinion? Nice comment though, Greg G, it gives credence to the old held belief that the "government" only tells us what they a) want us to hear and b) think is good for us to know.

Mongoose:

I have been following the UFO thing on and off since I was a kid, hoaxes, Venusians that dressed like farmers, light fixtures or hubcaps, government claims of swamp gas, mistaken sightings of venus, street lights reflecting off of migrating birds, and so on and so forth.

I do not claim to know what they are.

But I do think with very little doubt, that there are people in our government who to at least a large extent, do. (Notice my hedging .... I don't know anything on this subject with complete certainty.)

What I believe, with various confidence levels is more or less the following:

Many UFOs are normal aircraft, reflections or whatever ... only unknown to the observers. This includes rare or as yet unknown natural phenomena.

Some are test aircraft of some type, including secret military or government programs.

Of the remainder, some are "craft" of some kind, some "robotic" in one way or another, some occupied by intelligent beings, and some others may be something I have no idea of.

Of the two types of craft, I think some might be of human origin from perhaps another time or "dimension" but that most are alien to this planet (at least originally).

I strongly suspect that we are being "visited" and have been for a very long time and I allow for the idea that one or more of these visiting lifeforms may have interceded in some way with the evolution of our species, as we are beginning to do with some lifeforms on our own planet .. including ourselves. (That in no way interferes with any belief in God in my case, as I consider that God would be not limited to this earth and us alone. I allow for the possibility that our "God" of the Bible might be aliens, who may still be seeking "their God" ----- wouldn't that be a kick?) Like in some grade B movie, when europeans first visited some primitive peoples, they were thought of as gods. Further, our own collective history is replete with examples of where contact with a technologically superior culture "destroyed" the less advanced culture and value system. This is one reason a government would attempt to cover up visits of aliens as long as they could. It would be analagous to a god-chieftain on some island denying that one or two of his subjects saw a giant ship and strangely dressed beings who carried sticks that spit fire and smoke, and killed an animal at a great distance. His people would lose faith in their religion and in him if he allowed them all to believe the tale.

I strongly suspect that there is a conspiracy of sorts by a part of the government to keep this from us, because there are many reasons to do so ... some good, some not. I also believe that as part of this coverup the government sows disinformation to either aid in the coverup or conceal secret weapons programs, because if the SR-71 (blackbird) was designed decades ago, and it was, we must have some truly amazing things hidden away right now.

Now, I've put myself way out on a limb, because this possible alien stuff is all speculation, with no real evidence or proof of any kind. I have to allow for the possibility that it could all be part of a disinformation campaign to throw us off military secrets. I also have to allow for the possibility that it is only a modern version of things that "haunted" our ancestors, like goblins, incubi, demons etc. ... there may in the depths of the human mind be something that causes us to invent these things. I don't know what to make of the "alien abduction" thing, but I can't dismiss it entirely either, and ditto for any possible connection to the so called cattle mutilations.

I just don't know and it is frustrating as hell, although bottom line, I do think a connection to aliens coming here is likely. It is of course impossible to prove they are not, but without hard irrefutable evidence, nothing to prove they are .. only a lot of circumstantial things that tease people like myself as long as they are being "denied" (assuming they are, but the problem for conspiracies of secrecy is that they are hard to keep secret for very long ... which only adds more mystery when we hear "leaks" but no hard proof).

Are you confused yet? I am.

Those were some of my thoughts ... what are yours?

Re: French space agency to launch UFO archive

Hey Greg,

I remember an incident from my home suburb, The Bluff in Durban. This was apparently a chap who was in contact with Extra Terrestrials and claimed to have been visited by these lads from a distant galaxy! On a different track, at the conclusion of the Second world war, functional models (possibly even a full size working craft) in the shape of a disc (effectively a flying saucer) were captured by US forces in Europe. This device used a gyroscopic principle(?) etc....here unfortunately I get a bit vague as to details. Unfortunately work tends to interfere with fun and as yet I have had no chance to follow up. Maybe another subscriber can recommend a link or two.

Your line of thinking is somewhat similar to mine and I think to a heck of a lot of others out there. We are stuck in this Catch 22 parody of only having a certain amount of information available and at best this is second hand information anyway. So who do we actually trust?

Here is a different line of thought, If an average is taken of galaxies, stars (suns), solar systems and planets capable of supporting life AS WE KNOW IT are taken into consideration, we have a figure that indicates there are indeed planets out there that can support carbon based life? I think the idea I am referring to is quoted in "The Chariot of the Gods" by Erich von Daniken. Prophet or Charlatan?????? Who knows!

One thing I can be sure of though, is that Yesterday's Sci-Fi is today's reality and tomorrow's history!

Confusion arises from lack of information, the continued perpetuation of dis information and the willingness of the human mind to believe in the unbelievable. unquote.......Mongoose

Now Greg, if that doesn't confuse you, Nothing will.

Mongoose:

No, it doesn't confuse me worse than I am.

I've read "Chariots of the Gods" and at least one of his other books, along with many other books, articles, TV "documentaries" etc ... but as we both say "It sure is fascinating ... could be true, in part or even in whole .... but in the end, what are we to make of it?" Supposedly reputable stuff along with some obvious bunk coming at us from all directions.

Plus, it is very important to consider that if there is a coverup, then a parallel disinformation campaign would be a major part of it ...... and this clouds it all the more.

The saucer shaped german crafts along with things people on our side were working on were extrapolations of existing technology applied to some "novel" for the time aerodynamic theories. Basically they worked to one degree or another, but were difficult to control (This was before vectored jet powered technology was available). The Northrop flying wing, and earlier german variations were out there too. (Again, control was one of the problems). One saucer like craft on our side was developed by/with Avro of Canada. A few of these related concepts and craft came reasonably close to possible production by the germans or us, but apparently never got far beyond the prototype stage. They were all conventionally powered.

UFO reports from a century or more ago often involved "sausage shaped' craft that may or amy not have belched fire and smoke ... Its all fascinating!

Greg

There is a line from a kids movie "Never Ending Story 2" where the father (an engineer) states that "...what I see is what I see!!" The eternal pragmatic pessimistic engineer. The sad fact is that no one will tell us exactly what happened at Roswell, to name one incident. If indeed this was a space ship, the technology could not and would not be given out freely, for obvious reasons of state security. One dreads the thought of someone like Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe (well known African dictator and megalomaniac of note) getting hold of advanced weapons technology.

There are just too many reports that cannot be explained away and it is my firm belief that we are indeed not alone! With the amount of strife currently happening around the world, I suspect that flights to Planet Earth from the Celestial Airways Company and all tourist destinations here will very shortly be suspended pending the outcome of Armageddon!!!!!!

Okay, just my sick sense of humor shining through, while we are on this line of thinking what do you think of the Bermuda Triangle?

Re: French space agency to launch UFO archive

I also have been following UFO stories, etc., since I was a kid-16 or 17, as I can recall. I saw a photo in a Look Magazine 2 weeks later, confirming what I saw to be some sort of UFO. My father also saw it at the same time, but being the ultra-conservative he is, still won't admit it was unidentifiable, even though he could not do it. Then, last year, about 40 years later, I observed an stranger event. I looked up in the Seattle sky, during March of last year, and saw something that dumbfounded me. I saw a whole bunch of "V' shaped objects, at varying depths, with lights on each vector, making the "V". I could not believe my eyes. I could not see any stars in the sky, just these weird V shaped things. A couple of them rotated. I asked my friend, whose house I was working on, to come and look. He said said he had seen them on and off for the whole time he had lived there--about 16 years. To my amazement, he never thought twice about them. I made reports to UFO investigators shortly thereafter, but could not get a photo to prove it. I intend to try to borrow or rent equipment to photograph them this year, if I have the opportunity. About 2 weeks later, back in my home area, about 100 miles southwest, I saw another one--only one. This one was confirmed by my girlfriend, at house house I was leaving. It also rotated.

Recently, I saw a documentary on USO's. I found it to be very interesting and wondering if what I saw fell into that category, since it was out over Elliot Bay. Who knows. However, I do know one thing. I will try to be prepared better to get a picture next time I see them. I too think our species has been tinkered with by outsiders. After all, the famous philosopher, Eric Hoffer, felt that man somehow didn't seem to be of this earth.

It would be interesting if you manage to capture some images and post them on this site. It's bound to create a bit of a stir. Good luck!!

I recently bought the necessary camera/telescope adapters and have plans to borrow a good old film camera and a new style telescope. Hope to get pics within a month or 2. I've never seen anything like them before. I couldn't believe my buddy has seen them on and off for the past 17 years and thought nothing of them. Maybe he's one of "them".
