Food Choices Evolve Through Information Overload

Posted March 30, 2009 9:05 AM

From ScienceDaily: Latest Science News:

Ever been so overwhelmed by a huge restaurant menu that you end up choosing an old favorite instead of trying something new? Psychologists have long since thought that information overload leads to people repeatedly choosing what they know. Now, new research has shown that the same concept applies equally to hundreds of animal species, too.

Surely it's just evolutionary sense...
I've eaten this before and it didn't kill me, so I'll eat it again.
Same as our natural instinct to collect things...one blackberry is good, therfore a whole heap of 'em is even better.
I think this accounts for our obsessive natures.
One daft post on CR4 is fun...so I'll sit here all day typing gibberish

yeah..If I eat something that kills me, I'll take care not to eat it again.

But seriously, I find if I'm sick I go right off the food or drink which I've eaten recent before hand. I'll often go off tea or coffee and only slowly get the taste for it back again.

There was a study that was done with childred about the age of 15. This was atleast 20 years ago.

They set out a buffet and basically let them eat anything they wanted, sweets, meats, vegetables.

After the first day, the children started to eat what was good for them.

One child that had scurvy(mild case), every day she past a bowl of cod liver oil, and actually took a spoonful for about a week, even though she showed she did not like it....why I thought every body loves cod liver oil. she took a spoonful. after about a week she stop taking it. signs of scurvy were gone.

I think our body craves what it needs. I have the same felling about smoked chubs (a fish) and also liver. Beer doesn't count.

Beer doesn't count?!? hmm... there must be some other explanation. My body also craves good whisky now and again... and interestingly enough A bit of tobacco craving come along with.

My body needs a regular dose of CR4 aparently... not sure what Nutrient value it has...

I believe that at critical times when the body is in desperate need of a particular nutrient the body craves a food that contains that nutrient. Sometimes I crave things that make no sense and are typically things that I tolerate but don't necessarily like. On the other hand - pass the chocolate, dark please!
