California May Get Power From Solar Space Cells By 2016

Posted April 15, 2009 4:11 PM

From Gizmodo:

The idea of harnessing solar power from space has been around for a while; Asimov included it in at least two of his stories that I remember—but may finally be a reality come 2016.

PG&E, the state's largest power utility (and the one who gets my money every month), just signed a deal to get solar space power from Solaren.

The plan is to have solar panels collect the energy in space, shoot it down via RF transmissions, and convert that into usable electricity.

There's no risk to PG&E because they're not investing anything into the company, just agreeing to buy power at a certain rate if the space power does come through by 2016.

My wife died of a brain tumor, located exactly under the place where the antenna from her mobile telephone was located over her left ear (L. pariatel). I will do whatever I can, in her memory, to see the damn thing never gets off the ground.

That's horrible! I am so sorry to hear that. I've been through a similar story and I understand your pain and frustration completely.

My deepest sympathies go out to you.

That's absolutely tragic. I share your concern about this technolgy, and have GA'd you accordingly.

And what is the World to do with the extra low-grade heat that is dissipated when this power has done its job?

This sounds like a recipe for melting ice caps.

I found this page:

http://www.fcc.gov/oet/rfsafety/rf-faqs.html

It only take a moment to realise the dangers of firing high intensity RF through the atmosphere to a receiver. It's stupid really..... our atmosphere protects us from these naturally.

And imagine if that transmission "accidentally" wandered toward a specific target to "coincidentally" affect a specific group of people negatively. Talk about a silent, untraceable weapon.

Er, what dangers?

Wearing dress pants, most guys just toss their phone in their pocket. The first time I did that I came to the realization that my jewels were right there. Never did it again. Ha!

Or keeping it in your jacket pocket, right beside your heart.

May as well drill a hole in my head and install one permanently.... oh wait, it's available

Asimov must be smiling about this venture. I wonder what the intial cost for this venture will be.

I would like to guess what a kilowatt of power cost for the Space Station, and how many MW will this system put out?

This sound like an Asimov Pipe Dream.

2016 ? Yeah, right, and people will be taking vacations on Mars.

Apart from that not sounding likely, the wording of this a bit odd ;

"The energy transmitted by SBPS from space to Earth is five orders of magnitude less than the total solar radiation reaching the Earth (i.e. the power density of the beam is weaker than the power density of sunlight)."

It would be better to have solar panels on Earth, and try figure out how to get the energy to where it can be used. The Ruskies can kill your energy supply there just as easy.

OK Kris, so for those of us who are mathematically challenged, lets see; Huumm. At 1000 watts per sq.meter, times 1/2 earths surface in sq.meters, minus avg. cloud cover. That's what? Minus the 5 orders of magnitude = ? Holy $#!t !!!

Stick a fork in my ass and turn me over when I'm done.

Not going to happen on my watch !
