Honing is a metal removal process that affects bore diameter
and cylinder geometry. Typically, when someone is referring to a
"honed" surface, they are talking about a bore that has been sized
with a rigid hone. The result is a intermediate finish that is to-size with the
beginning of a proper surface finish.
This is where flexible honing comes in. The Flex-hone is
then used to further refine the surface finish. While not a material removal
tool in the typical sense of the word, the Flex-hone removes only the peaks and
rough, torn and folded metal left by the honing process. Brush Research uses
the term "plateau" to describe this finish.
A plateau finish is so named as it is the surface profile
that resembles a series of plateaus. The harsh peaks of a surface are removed,
leaving a substantially flat or plateau finish with much greater bearing area,
while maintaining a cross hatch pattern of valleys for oil retention.
While this is all well and good, where does an abrasive
nylon tool come into play?
