Why IT Won't Power Down PCs

Posted April 17, 2009 8:59 AM

From Slashdot:

Internal politics and poor leadership on sustainable IT strategies are among the top reasons preventing organizations from practicing proper PC power management — to the tune of $2.8 billion wasted per year powering unused PCs. According to a recent survey, 42 percent of IT shops do not manage PC energy consumption simply because no one in the organization has been made responsible for doing so — this despite greater awareness of IT power-saving myths, and PC power myths in particular. Worse, 22 percent of IT admins surveyed said that savings from PC power management 'flow to another department's budget.' In other words, resources spent by IT vs. the permanent energy crisis appear to result in little payback for IT.

There are a few other things companies must take into consideration.

Most companies have processes, updates and virus scanners that run overnight while no one is at work.

Also as far as a cost savings measure they must take into account the time spent of the person whose job it is to shut all the computers down. Sure there are probably software that would automate it but it can be tough to determine if anything is running on that computer.

Also it will be about 10 minutes wasted for each employee booting up their computer in the morning.

I'm not against saving power by turning PCs off but there are just some things to think about.

Worrying about all the little things will give you a little result.

Worry about the large energy waste like the AC too cold, or running at the same time as the heaters because the central air system is not well balanced or doesn't have enough zones. These are many times more energy than a few PC running.

While the proverbial straw breaks the camel's back, its the load of beams under it that produced the excessive stress. We still have many beams to work on. Don't waste too much energy on the straws...

Agreed... up to a point. The mass of individuals don't have control of the beams, but can control the straws. If you're not going to march in the streets to effect the beam control, then at least gather straws.

Somebody very famous once said something like " Don't be concerned by the straw in my eye when there is a beam in yours"

We all have beams in our own homes. Just look for them.

The industry is working on their own very large beams because it makes sense to save energy to reduce costs. There are very few exceptions to this. If going to a more efficient equipment saves money, most companies, if not all, will do it.

Trying to force "energy saving" or green energy by subsidizing them is rarely viable. It ends up costing more to the society. Since money comes from energy and vice versa, if it cost more, you spend more energy.
