World First for Strange Molecule

Posted April 23, 2009 9:14 AM

From BBC News | Science & Environment | UK Edition:

A molecule that until now existed only in theory has finally been made. Known as a Rydberg molecule, it is formed through an elusive and extremely weak chemical bond between two atoms. The new type of bonding, reported in Nature, occurs because one of the two atoms in the molecule has an electron very far from its nucleus or centre.

An interesting article, but the bond is very weak in the molecule (which is the reason for the low temperature).

And of what possible use is this new knowledge? And who pays to find and/or make these strange molecules? I would seriously like to know.

Shadetree,

This is, if nothing else, adding to the store house of our knowledge and capability - the how would one do that. If this, the molecule, never gets used the methodology of creating it is now available for other things that have so far been judged impossible.

Have faith in the Human Mind; we should applaud all new discoveries as without them we might still be back to what, cavemen?

Have fun

Sleepy

yes, you could even break down the elements of oh...lets say.....fire for instance.

Discoveries have always been made years before they found uses.

And of what possible use is this new knowledge?

Weren't similar comments made when the laser was first demonstrated?

ok......this has been awhile, in my courses in physical metalurgy, (chemistry....too long ago) there were three type of bonds.

1.) ionic,

2.) covalent

and

3.) metalic.

so what is this new type of bond called?

We could brainstorm some names.

  • Ultra weak
  • Far away
  • Outer rim
  • Plutonic
  • Ironic

The last one is a combination of the ionic and the metallic (iron) bonding.

Dammit Cat. I was thinking about that...but I wanted to keep this on a professional level.......then you coughed up that hair ball............your lucky that line that formed yesterday to get a piece of you is over 2 kilometers long today (and up to $7.53 by the way). hey that rymes.....i'm a poet, and didn't even know it.........there I go again

Anyways....I wish you'd put in a express lane. I put up $10.00 no......$8.25 for that

"How about 'James' "

Ha-Ha You think you're smart huh? Too stong, unless you're referring to the weak moral willpower of JB. I suspect it will be called the Rydberg, Fermi, or Bose. Or maybe the micro bond since it only lasted 18 uSec. Also too British, won't happen. More likely to get a French name. BTW, I learned how to say 'cut the grass' in French. It's 'Mo de lawn'.

brainstorming...ok

Ironic - I thought the last one in jest......but its only a hy-bred

  • bionic ; that pertain to having extraordinary strength, maybe the opposite of that anti-bionic?
  • mnemoinic ; no thats memory based, or maybe it does, the force is so weak.
  • chronic ; maybe because it has no other way to bond, possible, don't have enough info

This sort of thing might be relevant some day if we ever make it to mining asteroids: super cold environments where molecules can adopt these unexpected structures and behave differently. Do Rydbergs occur naturally in these environments? dunno... Quantum processing is a ways off, at this point, but you never know, the sheepdog effect may be important some day...

For example: would a sheepdog rubidium have any effect on the number of angels that can dance on the head of a pin... it's not inconceivable.
