Now, LCD Monitors Watch You

Posted April 27, 2009 8:52 AM

From CNET News.com:

Eizo Nanao has announced the inclusion of a "EcoView Sense" feature into their just announced FlexScan monitors; the 20-inch EV2023W and the 23-inch EV2303W. The EcoView feature, allows the monitors--using motion detectors--to detect if a person is sitting in front of it. If it senses for 40 seconds that no one is there, it puts the monitor into sleep mode. It then resumes normal operation when the user returns.

This is terrible news. When *I* enter sleep mode in front of my monitor at work and thus become motionless, this thing will be able to e-mail my boss!

Stupid idea.

It adds extra cost and potentially a huge annoyance factor.

I can certainly sit still for 40 secs while reading a long post/article.

I think they are trying to reduce power consumption and heat generation.

I tried sitting motionless for 40 seconds while re-reading these posts and it was difficult. I really had to concentrate - especially on not blinking. If the monitor's sensor works well enough, it might have a positive impact on large organizations' electric bills.

Of course it will eventually be used for monitoring/spying. All good intentions get FUBAR.

I think it's annoying and useless. Maybe you can save some amount of energy but it's not sure because you have to use more energy during the manufacturing. In addition a flickering screen which turns on and off on my desk in every minute would make me nervous and possibly would decrease my efficiency.

I think it's only a marketing trick, something you don't really need but you have to pay for...
