Best Buy May Start Selling Vinyl Records

Posted April 28, 2009 11:37 AM

From Gizmodo:

According to the New York Post, Best Buy is According to the New York Post, Best Buy is thinking about selling vinyl records again in their stores. I had to read that twice too. I would find "Nixon Returns From Grave" easier to believe. The reason: Vinyl albums' sales are growing. As much as 15 percent up in 2007 and a whooping 89% more in 2008. The 2009 forecast is better. The numbers are so good that Best Buy started a pilot program in 100 stores. The results were so good that the third largest music seller after iTunes and Wal-Mart is thinking about using as much as eight square feet in each of its 1,020 stores to sell vinyl records. While sales of vinyl discs are not as big as CDs, the latter numbers have dropped 20%. Apparently, vinyl are becoming a cult object, with an audience seeking the appeal of the physical format and the special sound of analog (which in the case of the classics, could be more attractive than the digital productions). The interest, although minimal considering the rest of the industry, is big enough that big labels are re-releasing old records in vinyl. One example: In September 2008 EMI started to a new line called "From the Capitol Vaults," which included The Beach Boys' "Pet Sounds," Jimi Hendrix's "Band of Gypsies," and Radiohead's "OK Computer."

In two related news stories:

Apparently in a bid not to be outdone by Best Buy in the highly competetive nostalgia-media sector, Wal-Mart announced today that starting in July they will be selling a wide variety of popular music on Edison wax cylinders.

Meanwhile, Microsoft has announced that in partnership with IBM they are soon to release a new Zune add-on device which enables Zune owners the freedom of both listening to and recording music and podcasts on IBM punch cards.

"Apparently, vinyl are becoming a cult object"

I think that definition has always been true since the introduction of CDs in the early 1980s.

There has always been a debate between vinyl and CDs and many people are headstrong on vinyl.

Personally, I like and miss the album art and cover information on vinyl records.

It's ironic that devices have been available for years that can rip vinyl to CD or MP3 automatically partitioning the tracks with no trouble from the music labels. I wonder if this will change? You can't play albums in your car or at the gym.

I've got an automotive 8 track player boxed up. I've been waiting for a classic car project to install it into. I've got plenty of tapes too, Steely Dan, ELO, BOC, etc...

I have seen a few titles in Best Buy stores, but at $20.00 each have to think hard about purchasing.

So people will listen to vinyl record on their new vinyl-to-digital turntables connected through their computers to their wide screen television surround sound systems

I have a friend who has over a thousand vinyls that he listens to regularly.

I have about 10 myself but no player. The ones I have are all more collector's items that are limited edition or autographed.

Although there is a limited demand for them, I don't think the demand is big enough to warrant them being sold in brick and mortar stores like Best Buy. Online yes.

Especially considering they are about 10x the size of a CD. Best Buy is probably just trying to think outside of the box to replace their lagging CD sales.

Yup - we're just ramping-up the audience (the market) ... getting them prepared for the next big advance: turntable cartridges with 3 ... count 'em, three needles! Two stereo grooves with a mono groove running down the middle on each platter...!!!

Then of course, after everyone's shelves are full, we'll re-release the all-new audio-review library on platters with 5 grooves ... This'll insure that our turntable factories stay in business, as we shall quit supplying cartridges for the 'older' styles...

We're already working-out a deal with the software giants to make all current codecs obsolete in the next OS releases... so ALL previous music files will end up in the recycle bins. You're wondering "how're we gonna DO that...?" By providing THEM with super-mini vinyls that play in their own "Pods" at our true-cost, so they can make a buck as well.

...where IS the "cynical sneer" emoticon...?!

YOU --- scoffing at our 3rd groove patent. Yeah, you. Ain't it obvious? 2 go "back-and-forth", while the middle one rides up-and-down. Carries the LFE signal as well!

I used to buy new vinyl at Newbury Comics. Most cost around $10, 45s usually around $3-5, and doubles closer to $20. Not sure how wide the store chain goes.

I'm disappointed to see this story break now. Two of my favorite used album shops when out of business several years ago. They wholesaled out all the leftover inventory for pennies on the dollar, I'm sure much of went to the landfill.

Aaaahhh - it is an analog world after all! "For every season, turn, turn, turn."

Time to get those two turn tables out of the shed into the house, hook them up to my 30 year old amp, which is still humming along, and rock like we used too! Better yet - where can I get a Jukebox?

I prefer vinyl over CD's as far as distance and ease of throwing.

Just in case you don't have a turn table to play your records, check out how these guys play their vinyl:

http://www.walyou.com/blog/2008/09/26/slot-car-racing-on-vinyl-records/

"Imagine racing slot cars and determining the speed of the music using the speed of the cars. You would mix and sample different Vinyl Record Music and using separate slot cars, you can rearrange tunes and playlists by racing against your friends. That is the kind of idea I can see this design from Yuri Suzuki develop into."
