Engineers Get LinkedIn

Posted May 10, 2009 4:45 PM by KER_Recruiter

In one of my previous blog entries, I mentioned that I could write a lengthy piece on the value of LinkedIn.com, a popular professional networking site. LinkedIn is more than just a career advancement or business development tool. As a technical recruiter, I regard LinkedIn as the Facebook or MySpace for engineers and other professionals.

Well over 35 million people belong to LinkedIn - and that number is growing everyday. During these difficult economic times, I'm surprised that the media hasn't touted this tool to a greater extent. So let's take a look at some of the benefits of getting LinkedIn.

Stay Connected with Past Colleagues

As a technical recruiter, I've noticed that many of the candidates I speak with have lost contact with former colleagues who could provide a work reference. As people change jobs and email addresses, it becomes harder and harder to re-connect with them.

LinkedIn lets you stay connected with past and present colleagues so that you never have to worry about "re-connecting" when you need a job reference. You can even ask your co-workers, managers, and clients to write a recommendation now and display it on your profile.

Join Groups to Get Answers and Make New Connections

LinkedIn lets you stay up-to-date and get connected to people in your industry via more than 1000 groups that are free to join. Many of these groups provide the option to receive daily emails and alerts about topics of interest. LinkedIn groups also let you connect with your alma mater and alumni. CR4 even has its own LinkedIn Group! Click here to join.

Can't find a group that suits your needs? Then start your own and recruit some members. I started my own LinkedIn group as the ASME Buffalo Chapter. Remember, too, that LinkedIn groups are not limited to work or professional affiliations. Some members have even started LinkedIn groups for their favorite sports teams.

Protect Your Privacy

If you're considered about on-line privacy, take some time to review the options that LinkedIn provides. For example, you can control who may view your profile and your connections. You can also limit who may contact you.

Do plan to get LinkedIn? If so, I hope you'll connect with me there. Click here to view my public profile. From there, you can add me to your own network.

Editor's Note: Jake Briggs (KER_Recruiter) is a Technical Direct Hire Recruiter for Kelly Engineering Resources in Amherst, New York. His territory includes the northeastern U.S. as well as the mid-Atlantic states.

Thanks for writing this blog entry, Jake. Personally, I've used LinkedIn to reconnect with classmates and colleagues that I'd long ago fallen out of touch with. I've also used LinkedIn groups to meet professionals in my geographic area, and to promote my "tweets" on Twitter.com. Finally, I've secured a few recommendations - just in case I ever lose track of those who can provide them.

Here's the link to that CR4 Group on LinkedIn again. I hope that more CR4ers will join us!

I have been registered on LinkedIn, and a member of the CR4 group, for a while. In my mind, however, there is something missing. What would be nice would be a place one could go to search for potential team members (not necessarily one's own contacts) that would be willing and able to participate in an engineering project. CR4 comes closer to the model I am looking for- say I need an electrical engineer for my project, with a valid license recognized by the government of, say, Guinea. In CR4, I can search the appropriate groups, and perhaps find a candidate I would be comfortable with joining the team I am building. It may be for a lack of experience using LinkedIn, but I don't see that possibility. Also, using CR4, I get a pretty good idea of the capabilities and interests of potential candidates through a review of past postings. Of course, Mr. Jake Briggs might not be all that excited about promoting recruiting efforts without the assistance of a professional recruiter...

As a professional technical recruiter, if you don't have the time or the tools to locate a specific individual for your team, I'd be a good resource. Before I become a potential resource for a client I make sure to gather the details to understand how they are locating talent. If I believe that it will be hard for me to compete against their internal efforts, then there is no need for my assistance. I only help who truly needs it.

I wish you the best in your recruiting efforts and yes CR4 is a great tool and resource.

I appreciate the response!

I use LinkedIn pretty extensively for keeping up with old co-workers and old friends. In my experience, it is a lot more controlled than some of the other social networking sites, for instance your college roommate can't post on your site that you once broke the world record for alcohol consumed in a 24 hour period without you first approving it. The site is really Facebook for adults if I had to make a comparison.

If I was searching for a job again, I would definitely put my LinkedIn address in my resume because I keep it fairly well up to date and it would give the potential employer a good idea of how I work with others and who some of my peers are. I'm in the CR4 group and also my college group.

Hello! I'm Danielle, I got an email about this blog from Juan Chapa who I met at a networking event though church. So, I thought I would check this out. Is this blog only for Engineers? I have been looking for resources and sites for Administrative and Human Resource Professionals since this is the field I would like to get into. I use Linked in more often now that I am looking for a job, I have mostly professional contacts but also some friends and classmates on there too. Facebook is also a great way to network and keep in touch with people I know. Even though Facebook is non professional, its still a great way to network, it makes networking easier and quicker. I am always looking to meet new professionals especially those in the field of Human Resources. It would be nice to get some informational interviews from professionals in order to learn more about the field of Human Resources. If you know of any HR professionals who may be willing to partake in an informational interview, please let me know!! Thanks!
