Posted May 11, 2009 7:38 AM

From CNET News.com:

An appeals court in Wisconsin decided that police can stick a GPS-tracking device on anyone they want without getting a search warrant. Even if that person is not suspected of anything more than living, breathing and expectorating.

I imagine the way to put a leash on such a potentially invasive behavior is for citizens to tag the cars of a few politicians with such devices. Then leak the info of the various late-night journeys to the press. If it's no different than visual surveillance then how can it be illegal for citizens to do? We're certainly allowed to follow anyone around so long as no harassment is intended. I'm sure the ACLU would concur.

The laws will change darned quick then.

If the police have enough evidence to justify a Judge giving them a warrant to attach a GPS device to someones personal property then I'm ok with it.

But no one should be allowed to track anyone without just cause.

Most Cell phones have GPS on them these days. And as long as the phone is turned on, (almost no one actually turns off their phone anymore), it will ping the cell towers every couple of minutes and thus could be used to locate a person withing a few miles of their location. But a GPS unit actually attached to the car would be more accurate as long as the person doesn't decide to park it and walk.
