The best mobile data carrier in America

Posted May 28, 2009 12:28 PM

From Engadget:

When T-Mobile finally decided to join the 3G data card bandwagon earlier this year, we figured it prudent to grab a few sticks from the likes of T-Mob, Sprint, Verizon Wireless and AT&T in order to see which carrier provides the most bang for the buck in the mobile data arena. And trust us, it's about more than just uplink and downlink rates in 2G / 3G regions these days -- it's about figuring out which operator provides the coverage you need at the price you can afford, all while dodging those precarious overage charges and finding yourself out of luck when traveling overseas.

Pretty good comparison.

One thing they did that is slightly different from the measurements used by the four US carriers is their coverage analysis. While the geography is impressive and easy to see at a glance, it is equally important to consider what is covered. So, some of the carriers don't just display maps, but they indicate how many airports they cover, how many city centers they cover, how many POPs (populations, or numbers of people) they cover and so on.

Therefore, the carriers tend to advertise to their strengths. If they have good geographic coverage, they will emphasize that. If they cover more key locations: city centers, airports, POPs, etc.) they will emphasize that. If they can't compete in those two categories, they will emphasize speed.
