To an observer in space, the human species' footprint on Planet Earth is vividly visible. Looking east from a location southwest of Ireland, an astronaut on the ISS took this nighttime panorama of population centers in Ireland and the United Kingdom.

Seriously though, if one considers that each of those pin-pricks of light is 1kW, then it's easy to visualise the issue that is becoming labelled, "global warming".

In some parts of the UK, district councils are invoking the turning off of street lights between, say, 0100 and 0500 (or dawn, whichever is earlier) to save energy, and therefore taxpayers' money. From this photo, it's easy to see what all the fuss is about, though some neighbourhoods don't like the idea.
