Millionth English Word is Announced

Posted June 11, 2009 8:00 AM

Texas-based Global Language Monitor (GLM) searches the internet for new words, and once it has been used 25,000 times, it gives it official word status. GLM makes its money from tracking web coverage for corporations.

That's nice. But it was truly a great day for civilization when the word 'gnarly' was added to Merriam-Webster's Collegiate. I sleep much sounder now. (Spell-check even accepted it).

You're right - it's just the millionth that they counted.

(Personally, I find "web 2.0" is not a word. And if it is a word, could they pick a duller one for the "million"... )

Why is this an engineering news? Nothing else going on in the world worth reporting? How about Dracula sighting next time and the discovery of sock interchageability law?
