Faucet Workaround Puts Hot and Cold Water Together Where They Belong

I can assure you that it is scientifically impossible to combine water of two different temperatures by simply connecting them directly together. As someone who has spent decades attempting to repair mixing faucets, I have arrived at the conclusion that such mixing simply cannot be done without at least a dozen delicate and oddly-shaped plastic bits, ill-fitting o-rings and unique metal springs working together in unison.

Your mixer is trying to control the temperature of the output by regulating the inputs of hot and cold water: the pictured "mixer" relies on the user adjusting the taps (faucets).

This is by no means new. There have been versions of this around since the sixties.

The one I remember my parents having in the bathroom had two rubber pipes that came from each tap to a Y shaped joint and from there via another pipe to a shower head.
