'Synthetic Tree' Could Catch Carbon in the Air

Posted June 24, 2009 8:50 AM

From CNN.com - Technology:

Scientists in the United States are developing a "synthetic tree" capable of collecting carbon around 1,000 times faster than the real thing. As the wind blows though plastic "leaves," the carbon is trapped in a chamber, compressed and stored as liquid carbon dioxide.

I think that I shall never see

a sorbent lovely as a tree.

A sorbent from a fractured mind

which has started to unwind.

A sorbent that to implement

goes against all good judgement.

No, such things do not come free

I think we should just plant a tree.

I would, really. But that would make it impossible for me to compete in amateur events.

Then I'd have to travel on the pro circuit, do all the usual endorsements, date beautiful people, make guest appearances, push myself too hard, develop a substance abuse problem, drop in and out of rehab, end up as a series of sad stories in the tabloids and eventually die penniless.

Thanks, but no. I'll just stay down on the farm. Safely anonymous and contentedly slopping the hogs.

You see, The problem is, I don't even know if your the person who wrote the poem... there is simply no way to ever know... hmm... maybe I should log on as guest just to poke fun.

PS... The "pro circuit" with all the hustle bustle, drugs sex and everything in between isn't so bad... you might give it a chance. hmmm but then again, If were all rockstars, who will be our audience?

I assume the intent of this invention is to mitigate the effect of man-made CO2. While I am sure it is a wonderful bit of technology that will find an appropriate application, just what is the carbon footprint to manufacture, operate, and dispose of this device? TANSTAAFL. Just plant a damn tree!

Is sequestration the CO2 equivalent of sweeping the dust under the carpet?

So, the energy it takes to manufacture the mechanical "tree", then convert to liquid carbon dioxide, plus ongoing maintenance costs, loss of green space, ongoing costs of storing liquid carbon dioxide, will all lead to the "1,000 times faster than the real thing" to be turned into a big loser. Doesn't anybody think things through anymore and try to figure them out? Its sad.

Barnie, there's an even more insidious result of this idiocy that no one seems to have seen. All that CO2 was formed by removing our current supply of O2 from the air as it combined with organic carbon, whether current or fossil in origin, whether by man's activity or by natural process. Remove the CO2, by whatever means, without recycling it through a plant, and you are effectively removing the Oxygen you need to breathe. As you sequester CO2, you sequester Oxygen. Mr Owl Gore needs to go back to 6th grade general science class on the Carbon cycle.

Unfortunately, the only thing more futile than arguing with an idiot is thinking you can win the argument.

Hi Barnie,

Here in the UK they plan to store liquified CO2 deep down in the disused oil wells in the North Sea then capping them!

Of course, you are right when you say that a sudden release of this CO2 hits the atmosphere, what will happen then???????????

Spencer.

Good grief.

Next, some idiot is going to claim that CO2 is somehow 'harmful' in the atmosphere.

Last I heard, in like 4th grade, was that there is this apparently no-longer-taught phenomena called the "Carbon-Cycle."

Let's see...more CO2 equals greener, faster growth of plants, which absorb CO2 and sunlight to produce O2 and bio-matter that can be used to make lots of neat things, like food, ethanol, burnable pellets, charcoal for the weekend BBQ, etc.

Does anyone else wonder what synthetic cannabis these government-subsidized so-called "scientists" have been smoking?
