Spanish Police Foil Remote-Controlled Zeppelin Jailbreak

Posted July 06, 2009 1:51 PM

From Gizmodo:

In a plot that's crazy (and evil genius) enough to be from James Bond, three people have been arrested after police discovered their plan to free a drug trafficker from an island prison using a 13-foot airship carrying night goggles, climbing gear and camouflage paint. It's believed that the inmate (of the Salto del Negro prison on the Canary Island of Las Palmas) was to scale the prison wall and speed off in a waiting car. The arrested men had setup an elaborate surveillance operation of the prison that involved a camouflaged tent, powerful binoculars, telephoto lenses, and motion detection sensors. But authorities caught wind of the plan when they intercepted the inflatable zeppelin as it arrived from the Italian town of Bergamo.

Unless its filled with unobtainium gas it would not hold a small cat in a little basket. This has to be a joke, to go this far and not know of the physics involved. Just off the top of my head, they could not have more than 28m/3 of any gas in it and again, off the top of my head, that would not lift much.

If I understand correctly there are going to be 4 guys , dangling of it, with gear and the lot, navigating through the night. Was there any mention of the silent propusion system used. Has to be a joke. I wonder what the charges are going to be. "Criminals brake laws of physics", maybe? Ky.

Maybe they were only using the Zeppelin to deliver the goods to him so that he could do all the scaling and running by himself.

Does that suggest a remote controlled silent propulsion system. They are getting smarter by the day.

Remote control is no problem. There are literaly hundreds of remote control systems avaliable on the Internet for next to nothing with a range of 1 to 2 miles. Just Google RC Airplanes. Silent propulsion? Electric is close enough just use a large prop to keep the RPM down. Next non-existent problem please.

"a 13-foot airship carrying night goggles, climbing gear and camouflage paint."

I see no reason that that is not completely feasible, and actually, sounds easily obtainable. The technology is readily available to build such a device, and i can imagine, it wouldn't be all that difficult to do so.

According to the table "Lift of Hydrogen Balloons" on a web page called "Balloon Lift," it would take one balloon with a diameter of 17 feet filled with 72847.88 liters of hydrogen to lift 179.07 lbs.

I see problems and at this stage would not participate in any further tinkering. I would try another way to succeed.

If I would be the defense I would plead for insanity. How about some Stairways to Heaven?

It must be a joke, Ky.

I think you should read it again, They were not lifting a human, just the tools to deliver to him.

"using a 13-foot airship carrying night goggles, climbing gear and camouflage paint. It's believed that the inmate (of the Salto del Negro prison on the Canary Island of Las Palmas) was to scale the prison wall and speed off in a waiting car."

How much do you think night vision goggles, climbing gear and paint weigh? I'd guess no more than 25 lbs, and thats probably on the heavy side (15lbs?). In any case I don't see any reason It is not completely possible to easily lift goggles, a few cans of paint, a bit of rope and a grappling hook. If this is unreasonable please explain to me why.

The little extra information I received has not helped much. I apologize for being a pessimist and wish all well. Good luck, Ky.
