Thunderclouds Accelerate Cosmic Electrons

As well as the spectacular lightning shows, thunderclouds can sometimes emit a series of unexplained gamma-ray bursts. Now, a group of researchers in Japan claims to have the best evidence yet that the clouds act as enormous particle accelerators — boosting the energy of cosmic electrons and creating gamma rays. The scientists reached this conclusion in the spirit of Benjamin Franklin by studying an electric storm from a mountaintop in Japan.

Probably. Anyone who's ever seen Japanese TV ads before will know that they have probably the weirdest sense of humor on Earth .
