Now, a group of researchers in Japan claims to have the best evidence yet that the clouds act as enormous particle accelerators — boosting the energy of cosmic electrons and creating gamma rays. The scientists reached this conclusion in the spirit of Benjamin Franklin by studying an electric storm from a mountaintop in Japan.
