What Keeps Engineers From Adopting MEMS?

Posted August 02, 2009 7:31 AM

A recent Electronic Component News online brainstorming article presents an amalgam of opinions from five subject experts on the existing and perceived barriers for adoption of MEMS by engineers. Individual opinions include lack of familiarity with MEMS design tools, lack of training and education, and lack of MEMS device customization as the biggest hurdles for MEMS adoption. What do you think is the largest obstacle to the adoption of MEMS? How can these barriers be overcome?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from MEMS Technology, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to MEMS Technology today.

The biggest obstacle is the use of acronyms! I'm sure I've seen somewhere what MEMS stands for, but at the moment I don't remember. Acronyms should always be defined the first time they are used in any article.

I fully agree with you.

MEMSMicro-ElectroMechanical System

But I don't understand the article based on this definition. That was the only listing on the acronym search...

Maybe MEMS means:

Mostly Everyone Maintains Stupidity.

Another load of rubbish the first time I saw and used a MEMS was an accelerometer ADXL202 back in 1997 so based on projection that alot use the MEMS industry is booming and I beleive this to true ie Hard drive, motor cars, gyros, a tonne of other apps are using these devices in millions .. so again the question is total BS ....
